Well I gone and done it again!
« on: February 06, 2014, 09:58:59 AM »
Found a lonely VZ24 mauser sitting in the corner of one my toy stores with an unloved look to it and very large SALE tag affixed to it. I got them down to 135.00 + tax. 152.50 out the door. Suitable sportering mausers are just getting harder and harder to find at this price so I jumped on it. Mechanically sound, dark bore, but clearly a lot of rifling, and no rust or pitting. No crest either. I'm gonna take it home and clean it up.
I promised myself no more projects until I finish the ones I already got going.... grrrrrr, I wish I could listen to my own advice. Oh well, on to the good stuff.
The follower has already been modified to allow close on empty so I am just trying to decide do I keep it as an 8mm mauser which I already have a sporter in this caliber, or rebarrel to 6.5x55 which I have always wanted or, 35 whelen for that once in a lifetime elk hunt or open up another one of my dream calibers in the 9.3x62 for that once in a lifetime hunt in Africa, or do I attempt to restore to get a military looking 8mm mauser...
This one is going to take a long time before I pick it up and start working on it, but it will just be sitting down there begging to be messed with. I just know it. ;)

Well my conundrum was short lived.
I decided to give my newest find to my middle son. He had a nice German k98 in full battle dress at one time and in his words "foolishly sold it" to buy a semi-auto wizbang pistol which he no longer has either. I have done that very thing myself.
This vZ24 is not a german k98, nor is it in as nice a condition as the mauser he sold. However, it does have potential and he wants to do a restore back to original condition. He knows he will not get it back to mint but will try to get it as close as possible.
First order of business is to detail strip it and get the bore looking good.

I will float that suggestion to him.
I am assuming a simple rebore and rechamber will make that work with a 8mm barrel or do you have to take off a thread or two to get a proper chamber?

yup jedman we appear to be afflicted by the same symptoms. I got a 35 remington bolt gun in the works and still need to finish crafting the custom stock for the 35 remington single shot as well as restock and put a new trigger on my 8mm mauser sporter. Then I have my 223 GSI forearme to finish and my 357 maxi stock got some nicks and scratches from deer season so I need to get that one redone too... Why I bought another project I have no idea, why can't I just buy a new gun and be happy?

sounds good,.......I was gonna ask if you ever considered re-chamber to 8mm-06.  I made dozens back in the early 80's for folks who wanted more punch than the 8x57.
