Is this an excellent example of what psychiatrists call a "Freudian slip" as explained by Sigmund Freud ? A Freudian slip is where the truth emerges in an unguarded moment, in spite of the efforts by the speaker to suppress that same truth.
Here, from the Free Dictionary:

Freudian slip
A verbal mistake that is thought to reveal a repressed belief, thought, or emotion.
Ironglow,
With a background in Psychology I can say that I agree with you that this could be the case. A 'Freudian slip', while it might not be a 100% guarantee, can be a fairly good barometer of what is going on in a person's psyche if it seems repetitive enough. Another rule of thumb I sometimes employ, and was verbalized so well in the great western Open Range, is what Charley Waite tells Boss. "A man will tell you his bad intentions if you listen."
Many people today do not want to take the time to listen.
