custom handi calibers
« on: February 07, 2014, 09:12:28 AM »
has anyone kept track of all the custom chamberings everyone on here has done with the handi rifle? I'm thinking a list would make interesting reading. Willing to bet our handis are one of the most customized rifle brands ever! I have the .357Max, .30-30 AI, and a .30-40 krag (Thanks George) and had a .45-120. Would be kinda cool to keep a list of what's been done to show possibilities.
Oh, almost forgot the soon to be .356 win!

Don't have any custom yet, but my first will be a 6.5x55.  Got a cool plan and I'll wait to reveal it when it is done.

I ain't as fancy as youze guys.  All I've got is two Maxis, a .32-20 , .356/.358 and a .445.  I guess I've got some homework to do :-[   One thing I will say for that little group is they all shoot.  The .32-20 is a "Trotter Special".  I wouldn't be without it.  It's in the "Ready Service" rack by the back door, right next to a Maxi, the .445 and the  .356/.358. They're my most grabbed, get the job done, rifles...They all work, and they're all very special to me.  The .356/.358 got my buck last season.

I can't include my .38-55, cause it is just shorty, 18 inches.  It ain't a non-standard. For me, it is a very special rifle.  I got it from my dearly beloved grandfather, Tim and it will always be cherished.  Kidding aside, Tim, quickdtoo, is the father of this rifle.  He made two.  He has one and I have the other.  I love the rifle and I love the caliber.  It is similar to the .45-70 in that it shoots a rainbow.  Learn the rainbow and follow it, there's a pot of gold at the end. I think of it as my Maxi Long Rifle.

I also have a Versa Pak barrel which is now a .22 WMR and it shoots GREAT. It is VERY accurate!!!!!

The only modified one I have is the 300AAC-R that was an insert done by a member here, very happy with it, it has a 1- 10 twist and can use 357 brass.
If I find a reasonable deal on a 357 barrel I will have it reamed to 357 Herrett.  My problem is that most cartridges I would want are small and there is no possibility of a ream job, ie 25/20, 25/35, 7X30 waters. The 30/40 might be a possibility still.

No customs here as yet but hope to have a .30-30 AI in the not to distant future. Also thinking a .225 Winchester, .225 AI (or .226 JDJ) would make a great Coyote Gun.

Has anyone tried the .219DW? Since it is basically a necked down 30-30 I thought it might shoot well in a Handi.

I have a 45 acp, and a 41 mag. Both on a 12g stub. Scout mount on the 41 mag with 2x pistol scope, 2x by 6 cheapo scope on the 45. Tactical stile. Shot a deer at 100+ yards this year with 45acp. Bang/flop but not dead, had to brain it. No tracking. Extra large doe.

I have a

.32 H&R Magnum
.270 Hornet
.357 Maximum (factory chamber)
.40-30  (.30-30 opened to 10mm
.445 Super Magnum

I prefer rimmed cases in the single shots

Would have a lot more, like a 7-30 Waters, if there was a source of unchambered replacement barrels

The only "Custom" I have is a recent 357 Max. But I will probably some day have a 327 Mag. I just love the little plinker rounds it will support. Don't know why I just do.

None yet but I may do a .22 K hornet for my son if I can find a .22 Hornet superlight barrel.

I'd love to do a .38 Special shorty stub job (I know, I know just get a .357 but I want a 38 for a small game gun and companion to my Ruger LCR).

I also wouldn't mind a .30 Carbine. There was one on the classifieds a while back but I missed it.
