Snagged a 45/70 Handi today!
« on: February 08, 2014, 11:44:42 AM »
I was at a local flea market, young guy in there had a 45/70 handi, with the synthetic stock, thumbhole black version. Had a nice pad on it, an scope base, Bushnell 4x scope, none of the gun traders would give him a second glance, and h had a box of .300gr  Federal fusion ammo. I asked him bottom dollar on it as he walked off, he said $200 cash! I paid him and went straight home, to my 150yd range. Sandbagged I hit 3 out of 4 pop cans at this distance. Man does that stock kick with those loads. May change the stock out as I never like a thumbhole stock. I thought I got a good deal, gun less than 6 months old, as new, what do you guys think.

IMHO you got a great deal.  If I were you I'd watch on here and get some wood stocks for the added weight, then sell the stocks you have on here.  For me it's a personal thing, I just don't care for synthetic stocks, even pallet wood looks better.  GW

I bought an after market thumbhole stock( ambidextrous) for my 45-70.
Asked the wife to sew my a bag from denim, shaped similar to the interior room in the butt and filled it with dry sand.Brought the free recoil down and didn't mess up the balance of the rifle.

That was a very good buy, congratulations! I have had six 45-70s, still have three. I must like them!

Congrats.  Great deal, but I'd definitely get a Boyd's thumbhole.  Much better than the plastic junk, imho.  ;)
