Brass Knocker Outer.
« on: February 09, 2014, 05:19:31 PM »
This may have been posted before, but I keep a 6" piece of 3/16" brass rod with me when shooting my Handis just in case I have a shell get stuck in the chamber. Break the action and drop it down the muzzle. It beats hauling a cleaning rod.

I got the idea because my 12 gauge got a shell stuck duck hunting and I used a ball point pen. The brass rod is smaller and heavier. Use 1/8" for a 17 cal Handi.

that's pretty smart.
i happened to remember that i have some
pieces of brass rod in my box that i
cut up and use for inexpensive punches.
it'd knock a stuck hull out as good as
anything else.

It's only been mentioned a time or a hundred!  ;D Fred's ejector notch in the FAQs sticky is a more convenient solution to a problematic ejector, but an even better option is a modern extractor barrel for which it's a non-issue.  8) There's a fix sticky in the shotgun forum for sticking shotgun hulls, shotguns and rimfires don't come with extractors, but all centerfire rifles have for many years for that very reason.....#&%@#& stuck brass complaints!

I only have this problem with my ejector barrel 22 hornet with hot hand loads or a dirty gun situation.  A piece of 6" 1/8 welding rod has served well.

Haven't had one get stuck yet, but I always have an old breakdown GI cleaning rod with me.  I do have an old 12 ga sxs that the extractor needs work. Took 2 20ga slugs filled the cavity with #7 shot, used that expanding epoxy glue to put the haves together.  Just drop it down the barrel and the empties pop out.  I know it would be easier to fix it , it is on the list.

A knocker was a common part of the shooting kit in the paper shell days for a day a'gunning, and I would expect the early days of coiled or copper/soft brass brass cartridges, especially in the bush. One does not want to be prising away at a cartridge rim with a hunting knife whist a large and/or toothy, very irritated critter does a jig upon you.
And it is just plain aggravating at the bench.......

A smaller caliber, heavy for caliber bullet has worked. Cover the barrel (with something other than your finger) and shake.

I carry a wire feed welder spare contact tip. Just dropped it down the barrel. I had a few issues with my brass sticking in my 9mm stub project and used this until I got everything adjusted and shimmed properly.
