Is the Versa-Pak .22 drilled for a scope rail??
« on: February 24, 2004, 03:20:53 PM »
Been thinking of my next little project gun, for my new and first grandchild, my  lovely 3 week old grandaughter Maeve (I might sight in in and shoot it a bit before she is ready to go, BUT, it WILL be her first gun!!). Anyone out there know if the .22 LR barrel in the Versa-Pak offering (.410 & .22 LR) is drilled and tapped for a scope rail? It comes with iron sights but was hoping someone out there has one and could check if it is all set to go for a scope rail. Thanks in advance for any help...<><.... :grin:

MSP Ret I asked this over at the old site. A guy had one and said it was drilled and tapped. He told me what weaver mount he used but can not remember the #.

MSP...I was looking at this combo at Gander Mtn but the display model only have the 410 barrel on it.  They wanted $159 for the Versa Pak Combo.

The description at the H&R website says nothing about being drilled and tapped.  Only that it comes with rifle sites.  If it is not drilled and tapped I might be a little leary of doing so.  There may not be enough meat to drill in to.  Of course I am not a gun smith so you may want to check that one out.

Heck, our child won't be here until this coming June so I have some time to shop around for a gun for him/her...Besides I think the kid should walk before they can fire a gun...Right  :shock:

My son wanted a Versa Pak Combo or a Rossi Matched Pair, but at 12 years old, the youth stock was a little small for him.  I bought a Pardner .410 and a Sportster 22LR for him instead.  It wasn't that much more expensive than the Versa Pak, and now he has two guns that are both capable of getting additional barrels.

If you bought a Pardner and a Sportster, your Grandaughter would need the youth stocks (eventually).  They are available from NEF for $28 (walnut) and $30 (synthetic).  When she gets bigger, you could put the original stocks back on.  When she has kids of her own, she could put the youth stocks back on and tell her young ones that they can learn to shoot with the guns that her Grandpa gave her when she was just a baby!

Moonlitin,

I like that approach - NEFs as family heirlooms sounds neat to me.  :grin:

Hey Whitetailer;
      Unless the Vari-pak is different, there should be a plethora of steel to tap into. My .22 mag sportster has a full 7/16" of steel surrounding the chamber and my old H&R Shikari .44 mag has over 5/16' of steel to tap into...just my two pennies...
    Also from western NY (southern tier)...

I bought one of those Versa Packs for my daughter and we shot it last summer. The 22 barrel is drilled for a scope rail. The best thing to do is order the scope rail from NEF/Marlin. I'm thinking about doing the same thing.
