How many grains of Pyrodex can you shoot in the Huntsman--100 or 150? :cb2:

Old Griz,

The Huntsman has a 100 gr recommended max of black powder or equivalent synthetic ( ie;  loose pyro,pellet,777 pellet,American Pioner Pwdr) and 100 gr equiv of loose 777 ( take into account that loose 777 is 15% hotter than those aforementioned,so approx 85 grs is = to 100 grs equivalent when using the loose 777.

The 100 gr max is by volumetric measurement.

p.s.,.....haven't found the need for 100 gr for my best accuracy and shooting enjoyment ( more like 80-85 grs)  & plenty for my liking.

The barrel on a Huntsman is too short to burn more than 100 grains.  You would just blow the excess out the barrel unburned.  To see what I mean take your muzzleloader to the range on a snowy day.  Shoot over fresh snow.  Start at about 75 grains, then go up in 5 grain incraments.  Do not exceed 100 grains, That's what H&R prints on the literature they distribute with the Huntsman.   After each shot check the snow.  When you start seeing unburned powder on the snow you have reached your optimam load.  That should be somewhere around 85 to 95 grains.  Most people I've talked to with Huntsman have also gotten their optimal performance at 85 grains.  So in other words at 100grains you're  just wasting powder.  I've done this with my Huntsman, Mossburg, T/C Hawken, and T/C Encore.  There is a big differance in what each shoots for optimal loads.

I've shot 150 grain loads out of a CVA and I'll tell you what......It may be an approved load to some, but not to me.  That load was a killer on both ends :-D

I have Encores and do not shoot over 100 gr. In my opinion it is not needed. The little extra velocity gained is not worth the recoil. Like I said it is just my opinion. Those who like it great. As a matter of fact my accuracy got worse with the heaver 150 gr. loads.  :D

Sourdough;

I'd love to try out your method, but we haven't seen a single flake of snow all winter down here in our corner of W. Tennessee.

I wonder how mad my wife will be if I put sheets down . . . ? :cb2:

Wish I could ship you some.  I've got 32 inches in my back yard.  When we go out the back door instead of stepping down two steps we have to climb up.  But it's great for snowmachineing.  Temp is above zero, which is nice for us.

I shoot 90 gr of 777 in my huntsman to push a 50 cal 240 gr T/C Mag Express Sabot. I could probably get away with 85 gr of powder. What's the big deal with pouring a max load of powder down the barrel ? Surely not for accuracy . Speed kills but only if it hits the target !

The only time I use Max loads, is when we are on Bait stations.  The range is 20 to 30 yards.  Not much chance of missing.  And I want to hit them hard.  I hate having to go into the woods after a wounded bear.

I am of the use only what you need school and I figure that the 150 grain loads are for selling powder!! You might get a little flatter trajectory but at what cost besides battering you and your gun!! I figure the 45/70 killed most every thing walking and did it with 70 grains of black and a heavy bullet so the muzzle loader should have no problems using a 100 grains. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

No doubt the guys shooting 150 gr of BP are also shooting 3 1/2" mags in their shotguns and are trying to figure out why they need shoulder surgery at the age of 30 .

I shot the biggest mule deer doe I have ever seen this last season. It was a 200 yard + shot with two pellets. It went through both shoulders and exited. 300 gr Hornady XTP. I don't need three pellets.
shot placement is everything.

Thanks guys. I haven't purchased a muzzleloader yet, but when looking through the ads and catalogs, all you see now is super velocity 150-gr models with 209 ignition, etc., etc., etc. I liked what I had heard about the NEF, but hadn't heard very much about it from guys who had used it. Since the NEF catalog didn't mention anything about the amount of powder you can use, I was curious. You have reassured me that this is merely a sales pitch rather than a practical innovation, and is not really needed.

Once again, the Graybeard forum has come through. I learn new stuff all the time!

Thanks again! :cb2:

Down there where you only kill whitetail, the 80 grain loads are fine.  Actually best.  But up here where our shots are from 40 to 250 yards we need the extra range.  Yea I know, all you got to do is sneak up a little closer.  That's a little hard to do when the tallest bush is only ankle high.  We alos need something that hits a little harder than you do.  Moose and Caribou take a little more to kill than whitetai.  We alos need that little extra just in case we run into those brown fellows that hang out in the same areas.  You know the ones with five daggers on each paw, and a mouth full of teeth.  Therefore I leave the Huntsman at home and carry the Encore, with three pellets.

My new Sidekick is rated for 150 grains, but only with Pyrodex Pellets.
Probably don't want customers having to measure out a max load of loose powder.

I have just tried 120 grains of Goex and after seeing the accuracy will stay with just that.
