Please help
« on: February 12, 2014, 11:30:20 AM »
A short time ago, I decided to disassemble my Handi-Rifle in order to do the trigger work as found under the FAQ's and HELP sticky. (TRIGGER IMPROVEMENT BY RAYNOR). Following the instructions closely, I successfully remove the trigger guard and assembly. Not wanting to complicate matters greatly, I simply removed the trigger and extension and polished them on a hard Arkansas stone. All had gone quite well at this point. Now I felt ready to reinsert the assembly. I made a slave pin, as called for by the instructions, to retain the assembly as it is inserted. I made witness marks on the splines of the pins and the frame for easy alignment. Ready to go, surely! At this point, I put the whole assembly back in the receiver, when I notice that the hammer is canted forward, unlike I had seen it previously. I thought I might need to realign the trigger extension with the hammer/sear. I removed the assembly and adjust the hammer, when, to my dismay, the hammer falls through the bottom of the receiver along with the hammer spring. Now, instead of a crisp, clean trigger on my rifle, I am left with a table top of parts. Beyond that, I have thoroughly befuddled myself, and turning to these forums, have sought the help of these knowledgeable folks. So, any advice on returning my rifle to an operating condition would be most appreciated.

rushcc,

If you live in NW Ohio I can come over and help you put it back together, however, I don't think I can give you written instructions that would help.   For now, just take a break from your receiver and come back to it later.  Study Perklos instructions and pictures and learn the parts and pieces and their relationship to each other.  You WILL get it reassembled and it will be easier to do the next time.

Good Luck,

BB

What BB said, download Perklo's instructions, they are much more detailed than Raynor's basic instructions, Perklo covers everything except the firing pin R&R.

Sounds like you drove out the hammer pin.  You don't really need to do all Perklo shows................unless your changing the hammer spring.  Bottom two pins holding the guard is all I take out.

Polish pins and holes (not in the receiver), lube with good trigger lube.  I make my own out of superlube and moly.  Put it together and good.

I never polish the sears or surfaces, just clean them.  Lube has brought all of mine within good specs.  May not for others.

BB, I'm afraid that I live far away from NW Ohio! I understand what you mean about being difficult to explain, too. I have the hammer returned to its proper position, but still don't understand the spring placement. Does the long arm face toward the rear (buttstock) or front (muzzle)? I know that the pin needs to go through the coils, but am pretty much lost beyond that. In regards to studying that article, it did help, but, again, spring placement has me stumped. It seems to point in a different direction than the disassembly diagram in the owner's manual. Both placements make sence in some ways, but neither seems to 'work'. Maybe I'm just seeing things wrong. Thanks again!

Perklo shows exactly how to install the hammer spring, take the time to download both sections, it includes excellent graphics as well, not just instructions. Place the short end of the hammer spring against the lug on the hammer, then force the long leg of the hammer spring under the edge of the frame opening. Be sure to make the hammer wedge(FAQs), it makes installing the trigger group much easier.

Thanks to all who chimed in with the advice! Got it all figured out and my Handi is up and running! I didn't make alterations to greatly reduce the trigger pull, but it is noticeably crisper and smoother. Thanks again!

It seems like about everything else is on youtube, why don't Tim make us a video? Might be hard to get good views, angles and lighting I don't know. Would it be possible and does anyone here have the capabilities. I'd feel better about tearing one apart. If you'd see my garage, you'd understand ;D
Don't need any more parts laying around specialy small ones ;)

It would have to be a mighty short video for me to do it, I think my camera will only handle about 2 minutes of video.  :-X

Tim, not to brag you up too much, but I'm sure 2 minutes would be all you need to assemble one!

now, can't you take multiple 2min vids and join them together with software?

Welcome to the best forum on the net.  I'm glad you got it figured out.  I was going to offer to help you put it back together, if you lived near me.  I guess the offer was a little late coming.  I did help an older gentleman, who lived in the Massachusetts area put his Sidekick back together.  He took it apart, and was unable to get it back together, plus he misplaced some parts.  From what he told me, quickdtoo was gracious enough to supply him with the parts (and never mentioned it).  I also tried explaining to him how to reassemble it thru emails, but was unable to do so.  Finally, since it was a FFL exempt muzzle loader, I asked him to send the receiver to me, along with the parts.  He did so, and I sent him back the reassembled receiver, he paid for the postage both ways.

I found that if your disassembling something for the first time, the best thing to do is use your digital camera, and take plenty of photos, as you go along.  That's what I did the first time I took, my Handi apart, I also did that when I had to replace the mowing deck on my lawn mower.  I was glad I did, when I originally put it back together, and ended up with a couple of extra parts after the deck was completely reassembled. :-[

You'll find this group of guys on this forum are the greatest, and most helpful of all gun type forums.  No arguments (except in the Politics Religion and the News section  :o ) here.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.
