« on: February 12, 2014, 11:56:12 AM »
Handloading for a handi is there anything a .30-30AI can do that the .30-40 cannot? trying to figure out if i really want to keep both.

The 30-40 can be loaded with to a faster velocity, the 30-30 AI uses more common brass ( cheaper).30-40 is more friendly with heavier bullets. Both have good reputations as a Hunting round. If you have both shoot them and see which you like the best.
What a wonderful problem to have :)

Just to add to Jeepman's post, .30-30ai requires special dies that aren't always around.  .30-40 also has factory ammo available although not super common.  You can shoot std. .30-30 in an AI, but the fire forming of the brass to the chamber tends to reduce velocity and performance on factory fodder.  My buddy found this out the hard way with his .257 Roberts AI version.  ;)  I went .30-40 because of the extra powder capacity and the longer neck which is good for heavy cast boolits.  ;)

The 30-40AI is an even better performer if you want an improved version of anything and are willing to spend $60 on AI dies.

Your question seems performance related, but I will offer up the following for consideration.
The 30-30 Chamber (Im not sure about the AI, though I think it relates to shoulder only) has an antiquated throat/leade angle from the early days of smokeless powder and jacketed bullets. The modern production 30-30 cases tend to be short for the chamber and some reform 38-55 and carefully trim to length for their specific chamber if cast bullet shooting is your primary interest (jacketed bullets are more forgiving). Also, some give the leade a more gentle taper from the rather abrupt, steep angle of the SAAMI spec. In spite of all this the 30-30 has been a satisfactory and favorite chambering in the H&R platform. AI should do as well and Ive heard it helps reduce the problematic case stretching (check your case length after each firing in 30-30 to get a sense of it).
The 30-40 Krag had the then 'state of the art' mil-spec ball seat throat and leade which has proven for years as a stellar basis for cast bullet, as well as jacketed bullets. Of the several that have been around here all have shot well.
The 30-40 should have less breech pressure for a given level of performance due to the greater case capacity and similar base dia. Jack the load up to comparable pressures and you should get more from the 30-40.
I believe that handloaded the 30-40 will do everything the 30-30AI can do and more. Factory loads are purposefully downloaded and not a fair comparison unless you dont reload (then I must ask,'why not?').

I don't have a 30-40 (30Gov't?) but do use some 303Brits.

to me it comes down to brass...   IF you can get 30-40 brass, then the 30-40 conversion makes HUGE sense..  even moreso with the AI version

as has been stated above, more case capacity, more velocity with all bullet weights, and handles Heavy's just great...   AND that cast friendly long neck!  Can be loaded down to equal the '30AI

what the 30-30AI has going for it, Brass...  cheap and everywhere.  Factory rounds..  cheap and everywhere.  can be loaded to moderate velocity in a SB2.  Less powder.

in my case, IF I could get my hands on '40 brass, and a gunsmith to rechamber, there would be NO questions

but I can't so, I am sticking to the '30AI

Jeepman makes an offer without peer....  I'd take him up on that IF I had brass.

Thanks fellas for all the resposnes. I have about 100 each of brass for both calibers. I have die sets for both the .30-40 krag and the .30-30AI. Both barrels are the thin taper with iron sights. I have shot the .30-30AI and have not shot the .30-40 yet.
What about reduced recoil loads for new shooters? can the .30-40 be loaded down with light bullets as far as the .30-30? I mean can i get the .30-40 down into the same amount of recoil or will the .30-30 go even lower?
I have SR4759 powder to try.

You can load both all the way down to round ball small gamers/plinkers to 32-20 equiv. with 100-115ish gr. bullets on up to full rock on.

Gcrank, so the .30-40 does everything the .30-30 or .30-30AI will do and then some!  Ok now I just need to decide if I need both. was goin to keep the .30-30 for light loads but looks like I might not have to do that. cool. Gonna shoot em both and see which one gets to stay.

Every shooter goes through these questions... we tend to convince ourselves that we need another one, and to do that we usually convince ourselves that the new one is somehow different and will fill some unique purpose (which of course is horse pucky... there are two hundred cartridges that could have killed that deer at 100 yards OR shot that "cloverleaf")... occasionally we look in the mirror and admit we have duplication upon duplication... which in and of itself is not a problem... until we start feeling guilty about it... at which point, it is time to off load some and streamline the arsenal... get back to basics... and back to just enjoying shooting...

There's a little tid-bit from uncle Hoyt... but as you may have guessed, I'm not one to talk...

With 1500+ 30-30 brass and two 158s, the choice was obvious.  For me...

Here's what I like about the 30-40: heavy metal. 30-06 full power 180 grs jacketed loads are about the point where I find target shooting uncomfortable. But I like large chunks of lead. Today I loaded a batch of Beartooth 220 grs RN paper patched to .314" over 4350. 220 grs at 2,000 fps is a hoot of a load and not uncomfortable to shoot.

I also load some .30 Carbine 110 grs short jackets over 4198 that zip along at 2700 fps and shoot super flat as woodchuck bombs.

But, I love the 30-30 too...
