The adventure continues
« on: February 13, 2014, 09:55:59 AM »
That .444 I bought has turned into quite the project.  In addition to black tape being used to shim the hinge, there appears to have been something done with a 1" spade bit at the screw hole inside the forend, plus a double layer of tape down the barrel channel.  I shimmed the hinge point with a piece of .003" feeler guage, took all the slack out.  Might bed the barrel to the frame, gonna start on the forend wood and make all that fit correctly.  Just as well trim off all the excess stock wood while I'm at it and refinish it.  "Bubba" can sure make a mess of things, my rule is: if you don't know what you're doing, DON'T!  He ought to read this site, I have sure learned a lot about Handis here.  GW

Personally, if the barrel was good, I'd try another frame and junk the forend and stock.  They can't be worth the effort if they've been Bubbafied.  At the moment, I have four spare SB2 frames.  A new barrel invariably locks up fine on one of them.  Pallet wood or black syn stock sets aren't worth a bunch of bucks.

GW,

Sounds to me like your 444M was accurized in the Profino Custom Shop! ::)   Sorry to hear you bought someone else's mess and I hope you are able to salvage your investment.

Actually the forearm can be repaired very nicely by using a pillar and proper bedding of the barrel channel .My 26" 25-06 has been shimmed and it is one of my most accurate Handi's.
Black tape has a lot of uses but I cannot think of any on a firearm ::)
Perhaps Pete  can enlighten us on the proper use of black tape as he is a retired wire twister ;D

My Dad retired from the black magic electrical work. You can do a lot of good stuff with vinyl electrical tape if it's the good USA made stuff!

In the 'smithing business out in the rural you get to deal with a lot of black tape on guns, I've even had them reinforced with radiator clamps.  This guy even tied down the loose ends of the sling with tape.  If all the pieces are there I can fix it, sometimes when they're not.  I really think this one sneaked out of the factory with that tiny bit of sideways slack in the hinge and Bubba was gonna "fix" it.  The forend won't be any problem, all of the wood looks good on the outside, metal finish looks good as new.  Bore is perfect, tho it had a trace of lead in it.  Before I play with external wood fit I'll work up some loads, take a few pics, and report back.  Onward!  GW
