Picked up a CVA Hawken type would like info please
« on: February 16, 2014, 01:26:40 AM »
Hi All

Picked her up for $50

Bore is about 85% shiny a little freckling in the grooves.

I don't know much about CVA muzzies except they were a cheaper rifle than say a TC.

But this one surprises me.  Set triggers are nice but also the lock can be adjusted for sear travel.

Just seems much nicer than most CVA's I have handled

Can anyone tell me more about it please?

See ya
Kid

The "Hawken" model is generally a very good rifle. The CVA Spanish barrels are of good quality and usually shoot very well if in good condition. A lot of the used CVAs floating around, though, were assembled from kits by their owners, so, if yours is not a factory assembled gun, the fitting of components can be spotty depending on the skill of the owner. Also, since your gun has double set triggers, that means it has the higher grade CVA lock with internal bridal and fly. For what you paid, sounds like you have gotten a real bargain and a good shooter. Have fun!

For the price, you can't beat it.  The only problem, you might encounter is getting any spare parts, from what I understand, CVA no longer services their traditional sidelock rifles.  They also sold off their remaining inventory, I don't remember exactly to whom.  Either Clear Creek or Deer Creek Products.

If you can't get any information on a load, use 1 1/2 X the caliber.

For example: for 50Cal.

50 (caliber) + 25 (1/2 caliber) = 75 grains (volumetric measure) powder.    In the past, I have used 70 grains of Pyrodex on a Thompson Center 50 cal rifle with round ball.

For added safety, start with 50 grains (caliber) and work up.  Best of luck with the rifle, if you ever want to get rid of it, I'm always looking for an inexpensive wall hanger. ;D

Sounds like ya got a good one Kid!!  ;) CVA still has manuals for their discontinued models, the Sidelock manual isn't just warranty info, it's a complete owner's manual.

You got a great deal! I've owned several over the years and they were all good shooters with both RB and Conical.  1/48 twist like the Thompsons and most other half stock hawkin type rifles.

it's hard to find a Bobcat in good shape for that price ;)

By the looks of the trigger guard and patchbox, it's a Hawken model.
