30-40 Krag Range Report (Redo)

Here's a redo post of my lost range report. I took out my rechambered 30-40 Krag today with a few loads that showed good accuracy potential at 25 and 50yds.

The first pic shows a 5 shot group with a 214gr Neo LRN and 5gr of Trail Boss at 50yds. Average velocity is 800fps.

The next pic shows a 5 shot group with a 165gr Ranch Dog LFP and 18gr of 2400 at 50yds. Average velocity is 1720fps.

The last groups shows a 5 shot group with a 180gr Hornady SP and 47gr of IMR 4350 at 90yds. Average velocity is 2400fps.

The Hornady load was proven on two hogs shortly after I left the range. I went to check my trail camera and while approaching the creek I heard a bit of commotion on the opposite side of the creek. There were 4 hogs rooting around totally oblivious to my presence. I turned around, walked back to the truck, grabbed my Handi, then snuck back to the creek. I drew a bead on one of the hogs that was high on the bank and sent a bullet his way. He squealed loudly and the other hogs froze. I shot the one below it on the side of the creek bank and it dropped into the water.

Since I don't mess with water, (long, cold story) I let them lay for the coyotes to devour.

I owe a great amount of appreciation to George for the rechamber. Without him to enable me, life would be pretty dull. ;D

Hey Dinny,

That RD group looks pretty good.  You have the mold?  I don't shoot 30 cal. cast, but was wondering if you cast those.

I plan to try a half grain on each side of 47 to see if it tightens the groups any. I wouldn't feel too bad settling for those groups I'm shooting now though.

I don't cast. I got those from another outstanding member, just like the 35cal RDs I got from one particularly nice fellow here.  ;)

If you want a 30-40K single shot you can try to find (and afford) a Ruger No.1..........or do the H&R trick; and look what ya get  ;D
FWIW, me and cold water had a fight once. I survived, but barely. Too many dont and I do not intend to try for round 2 either!

Nice!  If you want some real fun, size that 214 grs down, paper patch it out to throat size and use a just above start load of 4350 for a 220 grs jacketed bullet. The 30-40 is ideal for heavy cast and I have had great results with paper patched Lyman 311284 210 grs and 4350. Will be devastating on those hogs.

You might be surprised, I know I was.

Since the 214gr boolits are sized .311 and my sizing die resets the brass back to .308, I have been shaving lead every time I load those boolits. I tried to seat them in unsized brass but the bullet slips down into the case every time. Does that mean I need a custom sizing stem to get the best fit for my brass? Also, since I shoot jacketed bullets too, would it be better to just get a Lyman M die of the appropriate size and individually flare my case necks?

You need to try .312, possibly even more; the chamber throat is what you want to fill with as large a dia. cast bullet as will still chamber up and extract cleanly.
It can be a fine dance getting it just so, but once there, sooo very sweet.
The problem with having your size die squeeze it so far down, then having a bigger expander button bring it back up is that it work hardens the brass and you will get split necks way too soon unless you anneal each, or every other time (a pain).
Most of my calibers are loaded with cast bullets in fully fire-formed to the chamber brass with this methodology and IMHO shoot pretty nicely.

GC as usual knows his stuff. I paper patch 210gr Lyman 311284 out to .314 for my 1896 Krag Sporter. I trim, as pp 4350 loads do lengthen the case, but no longer neck size. The pp 311284 is sized .308 and patches out to .315.  It will seat properly in the case and then I put a very light crimp in it with the Lee Factory crimp which effectively sizes it at the neck to .314/.313 .  It creates an almost heeled bullet. Not sure what kind of throat the reamer George is using cuts but the one at the Armory in Springfield was pretty generous ! In straight cast I have shot .311 over 4198. They are nowhere near as accurate. Find out from George what the throat is on yours or slug it. Fill that and the 30-40 with heavy cast is a super treat!

Dinny,

These #2 alloy 220 gr warheads would do quite a nice job on hogs. Right between the shoulder and the ear. They are patched out too big for that nice sized throat, but some .311" sized would likely do nicely in yours.
