As most of you guys know I rescued a discontinued 3.5 Black Turkey 12 gauge from the pawn shop.  It has the 24'' threaded choke barrel, but only came with a knurled end screw in modified.  Any suggestions for a choke for this one?  Anyone have a spare they want to part with?

Will a full choke be enough or do I need an extra full choke?  What about an aftermarket like an Undertaker or Jellyhead?
Thanks again!
Stew

Full will be plenty but you could always go aftermarket if they're easier to find. I'd grab whatever you can find locally and start patterning some loads.

stew,

I think the extended XXXXXXFull turkey chokes have only one purpose and that is to take your money and put it in the pocket of the tube manufacturer.   The cost difference between a standard choke and one with a "Cool" name is quite a bit.  I would just get a regular full choke tube and like DB says, pattern your gun.  Look in the FAQs sticky and it will tell you which chokes will fit the H&R barrel.   FWIW, I would check and make sure the steel weight is in the stock channel of your shotgun.  If it isn't I would put lead shot in the stock bolt channel because a factory 3.5" 2 1/4oz turkey load in a light weight H&R shotgun can be a handful. A slip on limbsaver recoil pad would help as well.

The recoil pad on this model is actually very good.  I never had any issue with the 3.5s and the first thing I did was take out the weight.  I was actually impressed how well it eats up the recoil.  The factory extra full did great with buckshot.  I also got flush Mossberg 500 modified choke for mine for rabbits etc.  8)

Well I really doubt I will shoot any 3.5 in it. Mine does have the factory lead weight in it. I do have a LImbsaver slip on as a back up. May remove the factory pad and place a butt plate and then the slip on over that. I would love to find a factory choke for this shotgun. I have found some factory full flush chokes on the auction sites. I would like the extended xfull version.

You might check with H&R an see if the have any factory X-full chokes in stock. That's what I used to use, my 3.5" came from the factory with it. If they don't I used to buy Mossberg chokes right at Walmart, find a flush fit full and you'll have plenty of choke.

I think I already gave you this in a PM conversation, but there are several extended chokes, but they aren't cheap at TruLock.  8)

TB,
Yes you did provide me this information.  My rich uncle hasn't got out of the poor house yet.  This is why I posted this for other thoughts. LOL.

Mossberg 500 chokes work in H&R's. I have one these shotguns and for turkey I use a Tru Glo Ported turkey choke and shoot Federal 3" #5 turkey loads. #' actually pattern better than 3 1/2" in my gun

Spikehorn,
Glad you brought that up. I saw the same choke at Dunhams for like 24 bucks. It looks really nice. Extended and ported. Thanks for the input. I may try it.

I also used the Truglo ported with #5 Win 3" when I had my 1300 Win. Really nice pattern.
