It all happens fast, doesnt it......
But taking the gun 'down' while the critter gets on ya is not the way it is done; nobody knows how they will do until they are in the mix. A good read is,'The Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber', by Hemingway.
FWIW, I watched a u-tube of a lion in the bush launching from about 50yds away and it covered ground waayyy too fast to take time to think about it (think how fast a house cat can get up to speed and multiply the stride). Best be committed from the start, its not TV or a vid-game.

Yeah kinda like the 21 ft rule in a knife attack....Its hard to imagine that you with a gun can't normally react to a knife wielder 21 feet away from you. I'm pretty sure the first thing that would happen to me in a knife attack or hog attack would require a change of skivvies. I would have tried to swing and hit the hog with the rifle before I would have dropped it. After looking at it again it may be the case that the hog was chasing the dog and the guy didn't want to hit his dog, but it sounds like he did hit his dog when he did shoot.

Can't say with a lion but with a hog or knife wielding man running at full speed ( key word FULL speed ) a simple side step will go a long way to putting you in a better position to defend yourself. It will give you longer to draw a bead or weapon as the case maybe.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I've been in a situation where several smaller pigs ran by me after I started shooting the lead pig. I was real glad to have a 1911 in my hands and some combat training guiding me. It's an intense 3 seconds of man versus animal that is still a vivid memory. I have often thought about what I would do if I was carrying a single shot if/when it happens again. It only seems logical to start swinging the rifle like a club. I've been in combat situations where anything and everything was used as a weapon. These hog encounters would qualify as a comparable situation.

Thanks, Dinny

Crazy vid. Definitely not a handi though. That's a barrel release lever on the top, no hammer. It fires off two shots in total. Some sort of over-under, likely European.
What I have: 30-06 Handi (2003), 12ga mod. bbl
What I want: .22lr offset (versa-pack) bbl, 357 Max bbl

Years ago when the world and were young, I was hunting quail west of Jacksonville, FL.  My dog put up a bunch of hogs.  They ran until they realized there was only one dog and they turned on her.  I was carrying a 12 ga. pump with six number eights.  I emptied it into the hogs.  Didn't kill any but sorta discouraged them.  The dog came out of it okay.

Off topic, but talking about dogs, I lost two wonderful, loving, Beagles Monday morning to wolves....right behind my barn.  I never saw them.

Wasn't there a discussion a while back about a hog hunt with a handi?  As I recall gendoc said having a repeater was a lot better idea.

Pete, sorry to hear the loss of the two pups.

The thing that bothers me most is we have three other dogs.  I'm about scared to death to take them out in the dark.  The other two were killed in broad daylight.

There's a Handi Superlight .243, loaded, hanging by the back door.  That's the one that put eighteen bullets in 2.5 inches at 300 yards.  Tomorrow is out.  Snow, Rain, Sleet, 50 mph winds.  Friday that rifle, my snowshoes and I are taking a walk.  No...there's no way I would kill a sacred, protected Michigan wolf...But ya never know if you'd find one struck by lightning or something. ::)

Sorry to hear that, Pete.  That's a terrible loss.  I am lucky not to have to worry about wolves but I make a lot of frigid trips outside to "clear"  the yard before I take my Wife's dogs out to pee because of the coyotes.  At least I can dispatch those.

Bob, Normally that would work, but the ground is frozen :o

Jeff, the wolves are off the endangered list.  If they attack my livestock I can legally kill them.  Coyotes are to wolves as salamanders are to crocodiles.  The two dogs that were killed would have had a chance with coyotes.

Hate to hear that about your dogs Pete.  This damned reintroduction of the predators to keep the tree hugger  types happy is a bunch of BS in my personal opinion.  Articles and programs I have watched talk about wolves killing just for the fun of it.  Wolves apparently don't always eat everything they kill and are giving the cattle and sheep farmers out west the devil.

Across the MS river in LA they have gone to great lengths to reintroduce black bears and have been so successful that they are starting to turn into a problem that the locals over there are not used to dealing with.  Since they are extremely protected many are getting to be very bold, many locals are getting po'ed, honestly it is likely there is a clash coming.  Hunting them would help change that attitude quick.

Sorry to hear about your friends, Pete.  Even a coyote could eat our two up.  None in my neighborhood, but I found this interesting reading; from a different time...

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/34501/34501-h/34501-h.htm

Once... when I was young and lived far away, and it was really, really cold in the land of the high flags, my sister and I  watched wolves pull down a donkey one evening just across the field from our compound.  Nothing but little bits of fur left the next morning.  They even cracked the bones open and licked up the bloody snow.  Not those pretty National Geographic fluffballs.  Gaunt, bony, slinky, very nasty looking things.  Big.  I'd just gotten the Lord of the Rings set for Christmas.  Wargs suddenly seemed very real, and my 30-30 very puny.   I stayed inside for two straight days and read the trilogy; twice.

Good luck with the livestock defense.  Wondering if you have something long and sharp?
Think as if you LIFE depends on it... IT does..!  Be Well...

Pete

Mine wouldn't.  They're lap dogs and they get an armed escort when  they go "potty."  It gets to be a pain but it would devastate my Wife to lose one, let alone that way.

I love my Handis but for potty patrol, it's a repeater.  Good luck, Pete.

Good luck.

I wouldn't call it an attack.  Hogs will run into you if you stand in their path.  They can't see very good.

Nor Cape Buffalo, as I hear tell.
Heck, I had a dumb yearling doe about run me down one day in the woods. I was about 14, young and dumb too, and didnt step off the deer trail (duh). Critters on full tilt cover ground so dang fast.......
I got smarter, and have lived to 61, maybe just dumb luck?, and I could see going after pig, but I will take a repeater, thank you, and at least be on condition yellow.

These hog encounters would qualify as a comparable situation.

Thanks, Dinny
I agree with Dinny on this, as I was in the same situation but I was carrying my 30-30 Winchester.  The hog turned and came right at me and I opened fire when it initiated it's charge and I realized it's intent.
My two first shots missed it's mark, but the third dropped the hog within 30 feet of me.
You stay focused on the chore at hand, and you don't think about anything but stopping the charge!
There is plenty of time to shake afterwards.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
