Am I just lucky?
« on: February 19, 2014, 03:39:23 AM »
1) A friend called and asked if I was still interested in my 'dibbs' on his '43 K-98 Mauser sporterized into a pretty nice peep sighted classic stutzen many years ago. Of course!
2) My first loads, book at about 3/4 level, went right where it was looking. No tweaking really 'needed', but I'll mess around a bit anyway.
3) My cast bullet experiments met with success right off (PB, WWt alloy, using Ed Harris's 'Mattern' info) and I have a lovely, mild mannered, accurate, 50yd. -0- load for fun/varmints (likely still good to 100yd.)
This was almost too easy....... ;D

Aren't those cast bullets great? I have a 1903 Springfield built in 1945 with a pitted barrel that will put 180gr cast bullet's into right around 1/2" at 50yd all day long, great 50yds load. My 3yr old grandson could shoot the thing!

Yes sir, cast and me go back 30+ years now to almost the exclusion of those with coats on. I use as large a dia. cast bullet as will fit a fully fire-formed case mouth and still chamber/extract cleanly and almost always get quick, satisfying results. I find no need of high velocity with them either.
Im glad to hear another happy Springfield owner  ;D , mine shoots well with my nuttin' fancy bullets too, and will last forever doing so.
BTW, the happy place for many of my loads has basically been ending up about like a 32-40HV used to be, and they did well enough to win many matches.
