http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/02/20/fcc-official-others-warn-agency-study-would-squash-news-media-1st-amendment/

FCC official, others warn agency study could stifle freedom of the pressPublished February 20, 2014FoxNews.com            An Obama administration plan that would get researchers into newsrooms across the country is sparking concern among congressional Republicans and conservative groups.
The purpose of the proposed Federal Communications Commission study is to “identify and understand the critical information needs of the American public, with special emphasis on vulnerable-disadvantaged populations,” according to the agency. However, one agency commissioner, Ajit Pai, said in a Wall Street Journal op-ed piece Wednesday that the May 2013 proposal would allow researchers to “grill reporters, editors and station owners about how they decide which stories to run.”

He also said he feared the study might stifle the freedom of the press.
“The American people, for their part, disagree about what they want to watch,” wrote Pai, appointed to the FCC’s five-member commission in May 2012 by President Obama. “But everyone should agree on this: The government has no place pressuring media organizations into covering certain stories.”
The agency declined to comment. But watchdog groups immediately responded to Pai’s concerns.
“The FCC seems unable to keep its hands off the news media for any extended period of time,” Jeffrey Eisenach, a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, told FoxNews.com.
“It’s the same generic concern of needing a news nanny to make sure we’re all well informed,” he added. “The same people who are concerned about the NSA spying on Americans ought to be concerned about this.”

The research will include questions about the process by which stories are selected and on how often stations cover “critical information needs" and will be posed through voluntary surveys.
However, Pai remains wary.
“Participation is voluntary—in theory,” he wrote. But “the FCC's queries may be hard for the broadcasters to ignore. They would be out of business without an FCC license.”

Several months ago, the GOP-led House Committee on Energy and Commerce said the proposed field study showed “startling disregard” for the news media’s freedom and urged agency Commissioner Tom Wheeler to suspend the effort.
“Given the widespread calls for the commission to respect the First Amendment and stay out of the editorial decisions of reporters and broadcasters, we were shocked to see that the FCC is putting itself back in the business of attempting to control the political speech of journalists,” committee leaders wrote in their December 2013 letter. “It is wrong, it is unconstitutional, and we urge you to put a stop to this.”

Pai and Eisenach also argued the proposal could lead to the revival of the agency’s 1949 Fairness Doctrine, which resulted in lawsuits throughout the 1960s and '70s.
The agency stopped enforcing the policy in the late 1980s, and then-FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski eliminated it in August 2011.

The new project also will include newspaper and Internet content and is expected to start this spring with a field test in Columbia, S.C.
“This is an extremely troubling and dangerous development that represents the latest in an ongoing assault on the Constitution by the Obama administration,” said Jay Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice. “The federal government has no place attempting to control the media, using the unconstitutional actions of repressive regimes to squelch free speech.”

Barry has already said out Bill of Rights..is a "charter of negative rights".  Of course what he meant by "negative" was the fact that the Bill of Rights guarantees some rights to the people as opposed to a tyrannical government.  Or at least they were guaranteed until the current administration got in!
He is working to destroy the 4th amendment (privacy), the 2nd amendment and now, the first amendment!

I agree with Michelle.  She doesn't allow her kids to watch TV.
Study after study has shown how dangerous distracted driving is yet people continue to talk on their cell phones while driving. Driving in the U.S. requires your full attention. Many states and countries have made it illegal to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle and the federal government should follow their lead. Banning the use of cell phones while driving would have the added benefit of making the no-texting law enforceable.

Undoubtably they too, have plenty enough sense to realize what their parents are doing to the country. The truth would really be a shock i suppose.

It's actually quite the other way around.  Even the Obama's have enough sense to realize what the media is doing to the country.  The African American First Lady even knows watching too much television is pollution for her children.  It reminds me of what Clarence Thomas recently said about who the oppressors to himself were.  Thomas said it wasn't the Southerners, as is often portrayed by a biased media.  He said the most prejudice he ever felt was from NE liberals.  Another African American who is not afraid to say what he thinks.

Wondering why the liberal media isn't screeching about this invasion of their territory?

This "study" and the fact that an FCC Commissioner writes a Wall Street Journal piece raising the alarm really sends me over the edge.

I wrote my DC delegation demanding to know what they are doing about it.  We have elections in Alaska this year.  If our Dem senator (who I kinda like) doesn't come out on the right side of this I'll be actively opposing him.

If our Republican members don't speak up I'll be opposing them too!

I wasn't highlighting race.  I was highlighting that there are two honest Americans, who happened to be African Americans, and who think the way I do, that the media has a negative influence on all Americans.  Why did the media focus on their race?  I'm just reporting on the news and evidently this makes news when a political figure says something that is controversial or goes against popular conceptions, and if this happens to be an African American or even a liberal, well so be it.  These are our elected leaders.  Who elected the media to push their viewpoints?

The American people desire an end to the media's grip on 'popular culture'.  Here, the White House reports an online petition to deport Justin Bieber leads all other petitions and it looks like the online comments agree with that sentiment.  Americans are sick of the poisoning effect of the media on our culture.

High stakes: This electronic billboard went up in Chicago this week ahead of Friday's U.S.-Canada hockey game height=406

All Socialist Groups have to have a POLITICAL officer in the news media for a few reasons.
1) to ensure that the news is controled and only propaganda is sent
2) to make sure that the Media does not do their constitutional duty and act as a 4th branch of government to curtail coruption and shine light on the stealing of our rights.   And to inform the public of the truth and not post propaganda.
3) report back to their political masters who is loyaly advancing the socialist adgenda and who is a trouble maker that needs to be shipped off to Siberia or a camp.

This whole thing was another liberal...no it was a communist (liberal, communist--same thing) attempt at reinstating the fairness doctrine, which translates to full control of the media for uncontested propaganda purposes.  This affair should be a timely reminder of how far the commies are prepared to go and how they will never give up in their quest to have full control.

Soros may be behind this fiasco as well:

Universities in FCC Newsroom Probe Have Close Ties to Soros, Got $1.8M in Funding

February 21, 2014 - 10:01 PM

The FCC may have suspended its invasion into American newsrooms, but the controversial "Critical Information Needs" study also has George Soros' fingerprints all over it.
While disturbing, this should come as no surprise since Soros' gave more than $52 million to media organizations from 2000-2010.
Two schools were working with FCC on the project, according to Byron York of The Washington Examiner. The University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Communication and Democracy, were tasked by the FCC with coming up with criteria for what information is "critical" for Americans to have. The FCC study would have covered newspapers, websites, radio and television, according to The Washington Post.
On top of the 1st Amendment problems with this proposal, the schools involved have strong ties to liberal billionaire George Soros' Open Society Foundations and have gotten more than $1.8 million from since 2000.
The journalism programs at these schools have even more ties to Soros besides their funding, including faculty members writing for university-based publications allied with Soros-funded outlets.
The schools have collaborated on this project going back at least to 2012. Lewis A. Friedland, who was a "principle investigator" for the FCC on this project, also directs the Center for Communication and Democracy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He gave a presentation at Annenberg in Feb. 2012, on "communication ecology." This was just four months before the schools presented their findings to the FCC.

IMO...we are ALL Americans...aren't we? why should we have "Hyphenated Americans"? that does nothing more than widen the division of this country...if anything, should be called "American Africans" or "American Mexicans" or "American Chinese" or "American Irish"...etc...and BTW, as i'm sure many of you are aware of, there are many, many, CAUCASIAN AFRICANS; does "African" denote being black?

i actually believe the term "Black Americans" is more suitable to refer to Americans who are of a black origin...it certainly is more "Politically correct" isn't it?

each and every one of us could trace our family origins to a nation from a different conteninent...HOWEVER...we all are now under the same flag, the flag of the United States of America, are we not? why would we want to have allegience with "The old country"? why did our forefathers immigrate to the USA?

****HINT**** to get away from the "Old country"...most were fleeing tyranny, oppression and poverty.

one definition of "Diversity" is to divide...
