410 ???
« on: February 20, 2014, 01:18:11 AM »
I have a h&r youth 410. The barrel is full choke. This gun has a pattern at 30' that covers a 24"x 24" square.  :o I've tried remington and winchester  ammo with shot sizes 8# 6#  4#. With the pattren this thing has i would dream of trying to kill anything farther then 30' the way it is. What can I do to possibly get this gun to shoot better?

I have exp with 1 other 410. With it I killed ground hogs stone dead at 30 yards plus with #6 shot. I know some shotguns just shoot better then others but I'm still very confused with the diff in these 2 guns. Am i wrong to expect better performance out of this 410?

Yours is much different than mine. With 6 shot I can take a squirrel from the top of a tall tall tree. At 30 feet I have a shoe box size pattern.

Sounds pretty big.

Guess I'd start by looking the muzzle area over real good.  See if there's any dings, if it's cut square, any burrs, etc.  Front bead not protruding into the bore?

If it's used someone could have reamed all the choke out of it.

It may  have been cut down to shoot slugs or round balls and not have a choke.  Would need to measure the ID of the muzzle to know.

Just take a caliper if you have one and measure the inside diameter of the barrel.  If it is around .395, it's full choke; .402 is Modified and .406 is improved cylinder.  If it's closer to .410 than this, the choke's been removed or someone shot a lot of steel through it peening it out.  If it's that far, might be easier to send it to have screw chokes put in it.  I have contact information for someone who does it pretty reasonably., but I haven't had a chance to see the final work in person.  So not sure about recommending him.
