Have you tried regular small pistol primers?  The magnum pistol primers could be on the hard side for the hammer strikes.  The locking bar and the lug on the bottom of the barrels must engage solidly and have no slippage, hence no lubrication should be used when actually using the gun.  Hope this helps.

small rifle primers are the right ones to use for 357 max.  I tried them in 357 mag and with my loads they work fine. Still use small pistol for 38 spl.
Now to your problem, I'm sure the guys on here will get you fixed up, I would check firing pin protrusion and then get the better hammer spring.

Good latch engagement is dependent on friction to work properly oil/solvent will defeat that, so keep it dry.  ;) If you ask Brian what's the number one cause of accuracy complaints, he'll tell you it's oil on the latch engagement surfaces, it's also the easiest to fix....or prevent by us, it's also the reason why I store all my Handis muzzle down, just like my muzzleloaders.  ;)

Ive had several gun with the dreaded off center primer strike that worked fine. There is a tolerable amount allowable. Seems that if std. SR goes off it isnt the off center that is the problem.
Can you post pics?
Is it off center to 6 or 12:00?

I have one off at 12 also, as long as you can just switch primers to work no need to get too worked up,; maybe still consider getting the Wolff Extra Power Spring, sgl leg someday anyway.

I've a bunch of Handis with offset pin strikes, some a lot more off center than I like, but since I switched to Fed 210 primers as my standard for large rifle, I've not had a problem, Rem 7½ for small rifle in the 6x45, have used Wolff EP hammer springs for a long time, I buy em 5 or 10 at a time direct from Wolff to save a few $$.  ;)
