In their effort to further put the squeeze on self sufficient Americans, the EPA has banned the use of 80% of all woodburning stoves on the market. Next..your firepit, campfire and charcoal grill.

What about the people that only use wood and coal as their heat source. Many people living in rural Alaska only have wood stoves to heat their homes, they are not going to stop burning wood. With fuel oil at $8.00 a gallon they can't afford anything else. I for one will tell them to put their new rules where the sun don't shine, and keep burning. I will guarantee that if EPA comes to homes in Rural Alaska, and tells the folks they have to quite using their wood stoves someone will get shot. Odds are the bodies will never be found.

Can we say "One way hike in Grizzly Country". Bears, Coyotes, Foxes, and Ravens, don't leave much. Or dig a hole and drop the body through the ice in the Tanana River. Come spring it will be ground up by the ice and not much left.

Another post on this down in today's news.

But, the short answer is they can price-fix and tax LP, natural gas, fuel oil. So far they haven't been able to figure a way to do the same to the wood we cut. Less use of wood equals more tax money for the government and more profits for big oil.

Has nothing whatsoever to do with cleaning up the environment.

They have already GPS located all wells here and are talking about metering domestic wells along with the irrigation wells.

EPA is one of those govt. programs that has way to much power. Not sure if they can come into your house and fine you for using a wood burner. (I have 2 fireplace inserts) What I think they want to do, is make the manufacture's of the wood burners bring up their level of how complete the burn. Now, what I think they ought to do is, since the EPA is so concerned on air pollution from wood burning, at the outset of forest fire's in the west, Aug. thru Dec., every person paid by the federal govt. under the title of working for the EPA, drag their sorry a** out to Colorado, Utah, California, etc., wherever the biggest fire is, and help put it out. Lets see them back up the mouth with a little bit of action. gypsyman

First the subject line is a very misleading spin. Production and sale of NEW stoves will need to meet the new regs. Just like we had to do with getting pollution under control with vehicles. You do not have to replace the current stove you are using. You can always look for a used one too. At the Tractor Supply Store the stoves that meet or exceed the new regs range from around $600-$1,200 depending upon size. Is that cost a whole lot higher than previous stoves. Additionally the new stoves are more efficient to boot. It seems that many here would rather die of pollution, etc. then see anything that is considered government interference.

When I read it last week, it grandfathered in existing stove and stoves manufactured before a certain date. I THINK it was 01-01-2015. All new stoves had to have better particulate filters. Of course this will drive up costs...

Anyone see how the EPA redrew the boundaries of Wyoming and the reservation there?

Anyone see how Oklahoma had a law proposed that the EPA was null and void there?

So will the EPA ban slash burns and controlled-burn forest fires? And then there are the purposely burned grass fields. I might be wrong on this one, because I haven't seen that for awhile. It might already have been stopped, but I doubt it. I also wonder when Burger King and other such vendors will have to put catalytic converters on their grill stacks. Will the EPA regs apply to forest fires that the environmentalists insist should be allowed to burn when they are in a wilderness area? And then there are the pot smokers, the cigarette, pipe and cigar smokers. Around here we have a lot of outdoor fish smokers and the other day I went by a house where they were smokin some other kind of meat--mmmmmm yummy! Screw the EPA and the horse they rode in on.

I agree that the EPA is over-zealous and seriously over-reaches there mandate much of the time. However, for me personally, I'd LOVE to have wood stove heat that doesn't screw with my asthma. Getting more particulates out of the exhaust of the newest stoves won't really help most areas that have a lot of existing wood stoves in them... but in 10 years, 20 years it might. Think of LA in the 60s and how you couldn't see because of the smog. I think the reg's have helped a bunch there. I'm just repeating here, but some friends of mine complained about the smoke in the area they lived in around Fairbanks just a couple of years ago when they were stationed there. If it was as bad as they say... I couldn't live there. I wouldn't be able to breathe except on windy days. The new regs might help that too. I don't see anyone inspecting homes for this... only mandating new manufacturing standards.

But we do really need to restrict a bunch of the regulatory power of the EPA. They seem to run around with their head up their arse most of the time while they are writing regulations left and right.

While what you have said is TRUE, it's also true that SOME states and locals are banning the OLD stove altogether, forcing you to buy new (or replace the old) with the new design. The new design doesn't emit any smoke... It reburns that smoke so you get more heat on less wood ect., but you have to burn "seasoned" wood or that stove will never work right.

I ALSO want to add, some old stove makers are taking the sliders off their doors that control the draft. That makes the stove burn HOT and with NO draft control, they are reclassified as FIREPLACES!

Fireplaces have an "exception" to the new law, so the old stoves get a pass too! THEN you build a "draft control" over the holes in the door and you have your OLD STOVE back!

I'm surprised it's been allowed this long. I live in an area where a lot of people use them, and they stink. Bad. A little whiff of wood smoke now and then is ok, but when it's persistent, it is persistent, it is really annoying.

But in rural areas where here's nobody to bother but yourself, what's the harm? And in some places, it would be unlivable without wood heat.

Ater thinking more about it, i came up with another scenario. It might better belong in the "conspiracy theory" forum but since we already have a thread here..

In the 70's, there was a rush to buy woodburning stoves, stemming from inflated fuel prices.. It started up many new manufacturers like Buck and Black Bart, Appalachian stove co and Vermont casting. From overseas came a rush of stoves from jotul and Vogel. New businesses began in many cities selling all these stoves and until fuel prices came down in the 80's under Reagan, they sold like hotcakes as a wayto avoid paying inflated energy cost. What if they're nipping this way of providing oneself with tax free heat in the bud now, forcing more and more to pay full tax on all energy they use. While this has no immediate effect now, the EPA knows that down the road, woodstoves will become relics, replaced by electronic meters.

Does anybody really think that the regulations that are written now for stoves are going to stop? They never have and never will. Some people applaud the EPA due to the fact that they think the EPA is saving us by making our air cleaner. This has nothing to do with cleaner air. Remember this is a government agency, that has a thirst for ever greater power. After they get this little reg in place for wood stoves, they are coming after fireplaces, and outside wood/coal boilers that people use to heat water and their homes. Eventually the ban for wood stoves has already been thought of.
While the EPA is writing regulation after regulation, moving companies offshore, and increasing costs for everyone, in the name of clean air. The rest of the world continues to do whatever they want. Just as long as the EPA continues to blow smoke up our butts and tells us they are saving us from possible death, it must be all good.

JohnnyReb: you and DDZ are both right. However, I think (rather hope) that further down the road the epa wishes it could nip wood burners into history so they can tax us more. And no, the idiots writing those regs won't ever stop - they are of the mindset that everything they do is helping people live better. Maybe if, as Sourdough sez, they should take a one way walk into grizzly country they might learn something.

But then too, as Conan sez - sometimes the stoves stink, esp the 'airtight' models that you turn down low at night can really build up the creosote and as that begins to cook off slowly it becomes pretty acrid and I think that is the issue many have with wood stoves - maybe.

But, if we're gonna sit still while the epa blows smoke up our butts then they're gonna have to write new regs concerning the use of 2nd hand smoke...... imo

My stove has what the manf. calls a catalytic converter . You have an open hole to the flue on one side you open to get the stove up to heat then close it and by then the converter is hot and working. Unless you keep the stove roaring hot it won't draw well unless the damper is set for the open hole.
Mine is 15 years old , hope the new ones work better.
BTW someone mentioned our door boilers , most are not boilers they are water stoves as there is no top on the water box and no pressure vessel.

Hey Sourdough, they don't need to wait for ice on the Tanana, it's mean in July and August, I learned to run a Jet Foot on that river. Your right, EPA doesn't want to walk around the "Bush" to much. Leave it to JohnyReb to find something to fire us all up!! Gotta Love him.
