Encore barrel-frame fit
« on: February 20, 2014, 10:17:28 PM »
Hi folks,
I love my encore except for one thing: that slight little movement of the barrel within the frame. I know it's knit-picking but it's one more thing that introduces variation shot to shot, when, with the Omega for example, there's no movement. And hey, I'm admitting up front that this is knitpicking. :-[ ;D

Anyway. I know there are hinge pins available to reduce movement of the pin itself, but they can still allow for movement of the barrel after lockup.  So I'm just asking; has anyone tried to 'solidify' the area of the barrel below the breech and where that meets the frame with dampeners or filed-spot-welds - so that when that locks up it is firmly in place?

Just asking. I'm not going to mickey-rig anything but just wanted to see what other options were out there. Mines a nice older one and it'll stay that way.  8)

Thoughts?

Thanks!!

I have heard that some people have used shim material in the hinge area to make it fit tighter.  Personally it has not been a problem for me.  Mine shoot way better then I can.  I really have not noticed any movement in any of mine.  When putting a different barrel on a frame as putting the pin back into place there is a slight bit of movement, but not noticed after it is locked up and closed.
Take the forearm off and try to slip a feeler gauge in between the  lug and the side of the frame.   What is the thickness of the gauge?  That would give you and idea if you can use shim material or not.   Hope this is of some help.

I have and use 1X over sized hinge pins and even the Locker pin. Both work. The Locker pin takes up the slack plus will not work from side to side neither. It does require an allen wrench to switch barrels, only available for the Encore, and does contact the forend on some. The rubber ones flex out of the way. Had to work on a wood one a bit to not let it contact.
I have also put heavier locking lug springs in a couple. I got that tip from SSK a number of years ago when I sent them a 41 Mag to have reamed to 411 JDJ.
I bought a T/C custom flat-side from Fox Ridge. Along the way the pin was lost. I already had an extra 1x Contender pin so put it in with my 445 Supermag barrel with Heavy lug spring. It will never be taken apart. I have other frames and this combo shoots so well I call it "Black Death".

Before you try anything shoot it and work up a load. If it doesn't shoot well enough for you then try what you want.
