My experience with the 25-06 and different powders.

My experience with the 25-06.  The 25-06 is considered an overbore cartridge.  Meaning the case is oversized for the size of the bore.  Until lately there has been no powders that would bring out the full potential of this cartridge.  Same for the big Weatherby Cartridges.  OK, there has been powders that worked and gave good accuracy, but they did not develop the full potential of this case. 

Now that Hodgdon has came out with a new batch of powders, this cartridge can reach it's full potential.  I chose RETUMBO for several reasons.  1. Temp swings, Retumbo was designed to prevent velocity swings due to temp extreames.  2. Retumbo gives me the highest velocities from the 25-06 using the 110gr Nosler Accubond.  A moderate charge of Retumbo powder, gives me the same velocities as higher loads of other powders, with lower pressures. 

The snow test.  Take your regular load and shoot from the prone position, then go out and look for unburned powder in front of the shooting position.  Retumbo leaves no unburned powder from the 26" barrel.

Retumbo and N accubond 110 best velocity 1.25 MOA
IMR 4831 N Bal 100 best accuracy .6 MOA
SR 4759 Sierra 100 match best accuracy reduced load .75 MOA

IMR4831 and a 120g Speer grand slam is what I have loaded for my brother for over twenty years now.

You don't hear too much about this bullet but it works real well. Almaot too destructive up close. Lots of blood shot meat at under 50 yards.(at that velocity)  But out past 100 it's perfect. He has shot a coup coyotes as couple hundred yards with it. It's a inter arms commercial Mauser 98 action in a very nice nice walnut stock and shoots under 1" at one hundred (me shooting)

IMR 4350 works for me fast .Kill things fast an does a great job

Not heard much concerning the 26" 25-06.  Is it a good shooter from the handi perspective?

My only load in the 25/06 (a 24" barrel) is a 75gr Vmax over 55 gr of H414. My best groups were .525 @100, 1.85 @ 300, and 4.25 @ 550 yds. I don't use it on deer, just for varmints.

My best friend always used 4831 and 100 gr bullets that worked well for him. Your results are certainly impressive, I would not argue with success.

Wonderful, now I need to stock one more powder.   :P  The 20 or so varieties I have just wont do it...   I have a couple pounds of Mil-surp power on hand (H4831 I think) and it's a bit slow for the .30-06 and I'm looking forward to trying it in my .25-06 Handi.
