Maple stock ? no it is beech Done for now
« on: February 21, 2014, 07:47:37 AM »
I want the refinish the stock on my 44 This being my first refinish job I thought I would do a  stock  I picked up for 15.00 first as practice . Striped it sanded it and rubbed with a cloth for hours. its smooth as silk. The stock looks better than I thought it would. I think it is maple with a nice grain. I would like to make it a blond stock. I seen where maple is hard to stain evenly would casey tru oil give it a yellow tint thanks for any help.

I redid a Birch Marlin stock years ago with TruOil and I like how it looked.  It's still decent after 20+ years in my eyes.  ;)

I think many are confused over birch and beech, here's a little tutorial from a wood "expert", and my birch Pardner stock.  ;)

I'm not confused, it said birch on the box my grandpa had (he was the original owner) and many Marlins stocks have been birch through the years as were a lot of 10-22's.  All 3 of my Marlins are Birch, but they are older.  I don't usually see that kind of streaky dark splotches in them.

Here's some at Buds with Birch right in the description:

A lot of ads just call it hardwood though and many newer Marlins are going back to Walnut.  Maybe the birch is getting hard to find or something.  ;)

Who knows, it's sure white though when you strip a Marlin.  Took a lot of coats of oil to get it toned down a bit.  ;)  Just make sure you let each coat dry well, then steel wool lightly in between.  8)

I wouldn't give much credibility to Bud's descriptions, they still list half their H&Rs as New England which haven't been made since 2007!!  ::)  Marlin doesn't even list the M60 as having birch stocks, just walnut finished hardwood....just like H&R wood stocks, which are known to use both birch and beech.  ;D

Birch with Tru oil will likely give you the look you are looking for. If you want it a little darker Birch will yellow over time if exposed to sunlight. Good luck!

Agree with Watsi.  Birch or beech doesn't really matter.  Tru oil will give you that golden look you are looking for.

Ok went to the big city to work. cStopped by the wood smith store you guys are right it is beech. The problem is after my first coat of Tru oil I noticed a small  crack on the side near the end where the butt pad would go it is not very deep. I know it was not there when I sanded and rubbed it down. Did I get it to wet removing the finish. It road around in the cab of the back hoe for two days and I would work on it when I was waiting could of it got to dry setting by the heater. Should I try to do anything with the crack.

if the crack is running in from the butt, under the pad, go find a straight grained hardwood dowel, then you can drill a small dowel sized hole centered on the crack FROM the butt end so the hole is hidden by the pad

then roughen the dowel, smear some release aid onto the stock over/around the crack, mix up epoxy, force some into the hole, coat the dowel and "Gently Drive" it into the hole, forcing epoxy out the crack....

now, wipe off excess,  protect the wood, and apply some pressure on the crack to close it up.

once dry, scrape the epoxy off the side, cut the dowel flush, and finish as normal

at least that is what I would try

Am I right in assuming that wood that has been processed in the above manner has been palletized?  PC

You might have forced a 'check' with the power dry; it likely would have dried fine sitting in a warm spot in the house. Regardless is is what it is now. I dont think it will grow unless you do not seal the check well and the dowel epoxied in will prevent issues for sure, though I would make it a slide in fit with room for the thickish body of the epoxy rather than have to 'drive' it in at all. Like many things wood, if we do it decently and dont point out the 'less than perfect' stuff, likely nobody will notice.

I quess "Pallet Wood" is a confusing discription defining anything but pine.  Sort of like Fish Sticks made from Atlantic White fish.  BTW that's any fish in the Atlantic except Salmon.

White fish. I don't believe it includes herring, tuna, or mackerel either.

Here it is with 4 coats of Tru oil I used steel wool between coats not as nice as some but beats the fake walnut. I am going to pick up some stock wax and see what that does still not bad for a $15 gun show stock. I am going to think some more before doing the stock on the 44  Used 100 grain sand paper on the butt saved the dust mixed it with clear epoxy to fill the crack lightly sanded and recoated with Tru oil

I dont wax stocks. If a finish needs a touch up in the future you have to be sure to get ALL wax off to do so. Tough to know if you did until you put some finish on and it doesnt take.
