Met another great Texan today...
« on: February 21, 2014, 10:51:55 AM »
Swapped 'jbob' a hornet barrel for a 45-70.  Great guy, and I think we both got what we wanted.  Only a bit of lug filing and it thunks together solid.  Might have to give the latch shelf a little work.

Dug around in my parts stuff and this was the best I could do.

Big thanks to my good neighbor James!!!

22 Feb clarification.  I got the 45-70 [below], jbob got the hornet.

If you haven't cruised through GMDR for good pistol powder loads for your 45-70, give it a look-see.

10 grains Clays and a 405gn LFP make a solid thud out of my 45-70 22" Handi.  Cheaper than IMR-4895, too.

Have a bit of Unique and 4198 so I'm using them for the moment.  Lots of 405 cast leads.  Just having fun with out knocking myself into the gulf.  45-70 is like 30-30 - they just seem to work out better for me that others.

The stock is off a Huntsman and the comb is higher then a BC stock; why I used it.  Not so pretty though.

IIRC the Frank Marshall Jr. all rounder load for the 45-70 was about 13.0 of Unique.
Ive used it and liked it, but use a load of Trail Boss now that does the same and has better load density.
BTW, isnt saying 'another great Texan' redundant?

I don't think it's very nice to call Pete a ground rat... much less a fat-stupid one.
