Found 45-70 in shop

Was in a shop near me yesterday that seems to have some H&R's once in a while (near being about 45 miles away).  He had a 45-70 with Buffalo Classic wood and barrel, but the receiver was blued.  Were some of the factory guns blued instead of color cased?  It also had a blank in the front dovetail and no rear sight, just a scope base.  Wood was pretty good - blueing was nice. looked factory (crisp letttering). I think it had an HY serial prefix, but not real sure.  I thought he was bit high at $295 with it being used and missing the sights. Any thought on this? He had a new short barrel 45-70 with wood stock on the shelf for the same price.

Factory BC would be case colored, but it could very well be an accessory barrel on a Handi frame, or a BC frame that's been refinished, I have both.

I'd be suspicious that some swapping had taken place. Regardless, it is used and is what it is. If the lockup is good and it is, in fact, an SB-2 frame you could offer, or ask, for a better price.
The std. Williams WGRS peep sight is a 'field sight', not a target sight, so you would have the option of just what rear is a better sight for you to buy if you must have a peep.. A small bead front works far better for me as a field and casual target sight anyway and most used guns dont include the whole set of Lyman Inserts for the Globe Sight.
And if you really want to know what it is capable of for accuracy the scope is the way to go.
If it is clean and passes the tests that isnt a terrible price if you like a long barrel and the BC wood.

I'd say that was a very reasonable price as even Bud's has jumped them to $270 to $290 for the regular ones.  The 32" barrel alone is about a $175 dollar proposition to add to an existing frame and the wood isn't cheap either and they don't make it now.  I'd surely consider it if in the market for a .45-70.
