Documents found at Ukrainian president's abandoned home detail millions in lavish spending Published February 23, 2014 Associated Press

Next Slide Previous Slide   KIEV, Ukraine –  Cash: $12 million. Decoration of a dining hall and tea room: $2.3 million. Statue of a wild boar: $115,000. "A bribe": $4,000.
These are some of the expenses detailed in financial documents found in President Viktor Yanukovych's abandoned residence, which was occupied by protesters after the leader fled the capital.
As thousands of Ukrainians continued to tour Yanukovych's opulent estate outside of Kiev on Sunday, evidence was uncovered of lavish spending in an economy that is teetering on the verge of default.

Yanukovych left Kiev on Friday night after opposition protesters took control of the capital and the national parliament in the wake of deadly clashes with police last week. More than 70 people were killed and hundreds were injured.
While visitors gawked in awe and outrage at Yanukovych's luxurious mansions, ponds and exotic animals, journalists combed through heaps of documents that appeared to show a leader who basked in extravagant wealth while his country sought bailouts from both the West and Russia.

Many of the financial and other documents were burned, while others were dumped in a lake before Yanukovych fled his closely guarded residence, flying to the eastern city of Kharkiv, where his support base is strongest. Divers were able to retrieve many of the documents, and activists laid them out to dry.
Photos of the documents were posted online by Mustafa Nayem, a top Ukrainian investigative journalist for the Ukrainska Pravda website and Hromadske.tv online news channel. Other respected Ukrainian news outlets also reported on the documents.

One was a receipt for $12 million in cash. Another invoice was for a payment of $10 million. Some 80,000 euros (about $110,000) went for curtains in a room called the "knight's hall." Another 1.1 million euros (about $1.5 million) was spent on plants. Wooden decor for a handful of rooms cost $2.3 million.
Notably, $115,000 was spent for a statue of a "running boar," possibly intended for Yanukovych, who is an avid hunter.

One page listed expenditures, and next to item No. 47 on the sheet was a payment of 32,580 hryvna (nearly $4,000) for what was described as a "bribe" used in a bidding process.
The documents were sure to fuel more anger among protesters.
Yanukovych's whereabouts were unknown Sunday. An aide said she last spoke to him Saturday night and he considered himself the legitimate president of Ukraine and did not intend to leave the country.
His residence in the Mezhygirya Park, about 140 hectares (345 acres) of forested hills along the Dnipro River had become for many Ukrainians a symbol of a corrupt administration. The president refused to answer questions about the estate, saying he lived in a modest house on a small plot of land on the grounds.

Journalists' investigations traced the property and buildings around it to Yanukovych's allies.
After Yanukovych's departure from Kiev, the estate was taken over by the opposition's self-defense units, which opened it to visitors and deployed activists to maintain order and prevent any looting or property damage. Ukrainians, many bringing their children, rushed to tour the parks. They reacted with wonder and revulsion at the opulence, including Yanukovych's private golf courses, pig farm and a small zoo with ostriches and peacocks.

Some have called for turning the site into a hospital, sanatorium or even a "museum of corruption."
The Verkhovna Rada — Ukraine's parliament that is now controlled by the opposition — voted Sunday to turn over control of the estate to the government.
Yanukovych's lifestyle was on the minds of some in the crowd of thousands who flocked Sunday to the epicenter of the protests in Kiev's central square, known as the Maidan. The people paid their respects to those demonstrators who died in the unrest.

Yaryna Mosur, who left her two children in western Ukraine to take part in the protests, stood on the square wrapped in the Ukrainian flag as a black-robed Orthodox priest led prayers from a stage.
She said she was infuriated by the wealth on display in Yanukovych's estate.
"We are all in shock, but he will pay for it all dearly," Mosur said.

I couldn't help but think the same.  A few million on furniture.  A mill and a half on plants. That's exactly the sort of spending that wouldn't rate a thirty second mention on US news if our President spent it.  Drop in a bucket.

I understand your point, that the US should not interfere in the affairs of the Ukraine. But we should care when a people rise up against a corrupt and unjust leader and take the reigns of government back in their hands. It was an example set by our Founding Fathers and theirs is an example we should keep in mind in the hopes that we can do so at the ballot box rather than having to do so in Lafayette Sq.

If one of our states decided it didn't want to be a state anymore the same thing that is happening there would happen here.  Nobody would care.  Let them kill one another.  It saves us the work later.

What's wrong is, we've become a bunch of self-righteous, hypocritical, finger pointers. You're sarcasm is duly noted, warranted. What IS wrong with this picture.

At least the people of Ukraine have figured out that you can't get rid of a corrupt, evil dick tater by waiting around for an election.  What's it going to take before the people of this country figure it out?

Quite !
As for our founding Fathers didn't one of the most famous of them offer that we should not get entangled in others affairs ?
And is it fair to go into other countries knowing when we leave there will be a deadly price paid by those we leave behind ? At best we postpone what will happen.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/02/24/monument-to-corruption-ukraine-most-wanted-man-built-75m-home-on-25g-salary/

WOW, what a budgeting genius. He built a $75 million home on $25,000 a year salary. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Monument to corruption: Ukraine's most-wanted man built $75M home on a $25G salary Published February 24, 2014 FoxNews.com     The $2.3 million dining room?

Former President Viktor Yanukovych's sprawling mansion, now abandoned  Documents found in Viktor Yanukovych's mansion outside of Kiev appear to show a leader who basked in extravagant wealth while Ukraine sought bailouts from both the West and Russia.
The Ukraine’s most-wanted man, ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, remains on the run as his stunned countrymen tour his dream home, the impoverished nation’s answer to Versailles and what some are calling a “monument to corruption.”
Yanukovych, who OpenDemocracy.net reported earned less than $25,000 per year for most of his political career, is believed to have owned several homes around the economically-strapped nation, but none symbolized his greed and corruption more than the $75 million mansion he completed in Mezhyhirya in 2012. Built on the site of a Soviet-era dacha, the 340-acre estate, just north of Kiev on the bank of the Dnieper River, has features that would make the stickiest-fingered dictator blush, according to OpenDemocracy.net.

In a 2012 article on the excesses of Mezhyhirya, the nonprofit site reported that:

  • Each of the mansion’s Lebanese cedar doors cost $64,000.
  • Three sets of wooden paneling for staircases cost $200,000.
  • Cladding for a neoclassical column and parapet for a flight of steps cost $430,000.
  • In just 18 months, Yanukovych spent nearly $9.5 million on imported fittings for the home.
“In a country where 35 percent of the population lives under the poverty line, spending $100,000 on each individual chandelier seems excessive, to say the least,” wrote Sergii Leshchenko.

“In a country where 35 percent of the population live under poverty line, spending $100,000 dollars on each individual chandelier seems excessive, to say the least.”
- Sergii Leshchenko, OpenDemocracy.net Yanukovych even used the people’s money to build a gleaming new highway connecting Mezhyhirya to Kiev shortly after he came to power in 2010.

The story of how Yanukovych acquired the 340-acre estate where he built his dream home illustrates his brazen abuse of power to enrich himself, say critics. The property, built on the site of a 14th century monastery, was originally a Soviet-era dacha, or country home, used by communist leaders as a getaway. After Ukraine gained its independence from Russia, it was used to accommodate foreign delegations. But when Yanukovych was appointed prime minister in 2002, he moved into the dacha. First, he rented the home; then, after a series of changes in Ukraine’s government that saw him leave and return to power, he simply took the home for himself, according to OpenDemocracy.net.

When he became president in 2010, he demolished all of the buildings at Mezhyhirya and began building his dream home, a five-story stone palace replete with imported marble floors, gold fixtures and exotic wood -- and surrounded by a 35-mile long, 15-foot high fence. Although he often bragged about his home to other world leaders, his ego did have a limit: When the Finnish construction company that built it for him sought to nominate it for inclusion in the Guinness Book of Records based on its sheer size, Yanukovych blocked the move.

The 63-year-old Yanukovych served as president of Ukraine from 2010 until last week, when he was ousted from power in what he called a coup. He is now the nation’s most-wanted man, accused of a litany of crimes -- including murder and corruption.
A political survivor who as a teen served prison time for robbery and assault, Yanukovych rose from a career as a trucking manager and mechanical engineer in the 1970s and 1980s to a minor position in the province of Donestk. In 1997, he became the governor of Donetsk, serving until 2002 when he became prime minister of Ukraine. He held that position for two years, before failing in his first bid to become president. But he returned as prime minister in 2006, serving another two years and setting the stage for his election to the presidency in February 2010.

With the manhunt now on for the ousted kleptocrat, the home reporters called a “monument to corruption” is open to the people, with opposition guards on hand to prevent looting. Thousands of Ukrainians poured onto the grounds over the weekend, marveling at the sheer opulence in which their former president lived.
Visitors gawked in awe and outrage at the ponds and exotic animals, and journalists combed through heaps of documents that appeared to show a leader who basked in extravagant wealth while his country sought bailouts from both the West and Russia.
Many of the financial and other documents were burned, while others were dumped in a lake before Yanukovych fled his closely guarded residence, flying to the eastern city of Kharkiv, where his support base is strongest. Divers were able to retrieve many of the documents, and activists laid them out to dry.
The drying papers included a bank receipt for $12 million in cash, a $2.3 million receipt for the decoration of a dining hall and a $115,000 price tag for a statue of a wild boar.

Photos of the documents were posted online by Mustafa Nayem, a top Ukrainian investigative journalist for the Ukrainska Pravda website and Hromadske.tv online news channel.
Yanukovych remains at large, but for now it seems clear he will never again dwell in the lavish home he built. Freedom-minded Ukrainians, still stunned at the greed of their ousted president, are calling for the home to be turned into a hospital, sanatorium or even a “museum of corruption."

Remember, our media commissar, Murdoch, lives in a $57 Million dacha, and he's only a media executive, here in America!  Here in America, the Marxist media elites live better than the President!  I think Obama should take over Murdoch's mansion.  That would be a good symbolic first step.
Study after study has shown how dangerous distracted driving is yet people continue to talk on their cell phones while driving. Driving in the U.S. requires your full attention. Many states and countries have made it illegal to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle and the federal government should follow their lead. Banning the use of cell phones while driving would have the added benefit of making the no-texting law enforceable.
