I always use an over sized hefty tube mailer cut to length.  My wife's office saves them for me. I put the barrel in one inch to inch and a quarter foam pipe insulation.  I then pack the ends with shipping material and cover both ends with two or three layers of cardboard or plywood rounds.  I put the caps on and duct tape them over the top all the way around and then secure it with another wrap or two around them on the tube.  I haven't lost any.....yet ???   Oh yeah, I cover the addresses with clear packing tape to keep them where they belong.

The tubes I use I bought online somewhere  u-line?....very very thick and heavy. They had them in different lengths I bought 30"x 3" or so I think. Shorter barrels I cut the tube off some with sliding power miter saw..make a good club...I bought a box of 25 or 50 and am about out.. Be difficult to bust one apart by hitting something with it.
12g shortie w/chokes,Tamer .410,12g "Buck" slug gun w/20g extra barrel, 12g smooth bore tracker I, 45/410 w/22vp matched set, 7mm-08, .308 20",

my avatar pic is my 1960 Rambler I bought in 1972 for $175..6 banger 3-on-the-tree...drove it for 5 yrs  22mpg.. was "hot-rodding" (LOL) one night...tore out 1st/reverse gear. Drove it that way for 2 yrs(with no reverse and only 2nd and high)  Had to really plan ahead when parking.
sold it for $125

I don't understand.
Everyone says they use USPS to ship barrels.USPS in my town here in VA flat refuses to ship a barrel of any type.
They just flat out say no.
I tried to explain that it was not considered a firearm and could not be made to fire with out a frame and they still refused.
Gave up on them and have never been back.
That is why I always use Fed-Ex insured.

So they ask what's in your package and you tell them?

I buy postage and label online....before it prints you verify that you are not shipping anything hazardous and within their rules, etc/ Then I usually walk pkg out and hand it to the mail lady as she drives up to mailbox if I'm home. She never asks what it is. I shipped 2 receivers the other day in a small flat rate box and simply left it in box with flag up.  I have a wireless alarm on my mailbox that goes off in the house when the door is opened, that will alert me when the mail arrives but also alerts me when mailbox is opened.

If not I leave on front porch and they have to get out of their little truck and come get it.

The post offices that refuse to ship barrels aren't following their own rules.
