Anyone seen the Al Jazheera (sp?) news?
« on: February 25, 2014, 01:46:10 AM »
Has anyone seen it on TV here?  I have a co-worker here who watches it and like it and says they only report the news and don't offer any spin.  I don't have cable or satellite so I haven't seen it.  Not that I would watch it.  Just wondering if anyone has anything substantive to say on the subject?

I'm not big on TV news of any kind but I will pull it up as often as any other.  I must agree with your coworker, they seem to offer nothing but the news and without any fluff or spin.  They also don't seem to broadcast any of the government propaganda reporting that seems to be the mainstay of so many others.

Can't get it up here. I presume there is some lobbying effort to block it.

It would be interesting if it was available for contrast if nothing else.

I have watched it several times just to see what it was/is and it seems to be a no BS reporting station. But I wonder if it is a process where they get a following then start the brain washing ?
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Wikipedia says Al Jazeera English, at least, is widely available in the north country:
It is readily available on most major Canadian television providers including Rogers and Bell TV after the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission approved the channel for distribution in Canada on 26 November 2009.

Al Jazeera English has some significant programming overlap with newer Al Jazeera American, but there is a lot of US produced content that is only available on the American channel.

I check on their website from time to time but am intentionally cable-less myself, so I've not watched much.

Also Jazeera bought Al Gore's cable station, the name of which I can't recall, in early 2013. Gore's station was so bad that numerous cable providers had dropped it and Al Jazeera America will have  had a hard time getting those slots back.

Al Jazeera' s world service is excellent. Very much as good as the BBC and they have a lot of resources, both financial and in terms of reporters on the ground. They are editorially neutral an  because they actually cover the news, it isn't just a bunch opinionated talking heads arguing ideology. Their Arabic service is also good but does editorially cater to their demographics. They do however regularly flay the skin off the Kuwaitis which I like.

Quite interesting.  My coworker is a hardcore liberal, democrat.  NOT an uniformed voter.  I was sceptical of what she was telling me since a lot of libs think they are always telling the "real" truth.  I can't watch it and probably wouldn't but it's interesting to hear what you guys are saying about it.

I watched it a few times. Seemed fair, but I just don't have time to stay hooked with it. Like others I suspected they'll dust thier opinion when useful to them like other channels do.

I haven't seen the tv show, but the news website is good, except when it comes to reporting about Israel. Then it gets a bit skewed.

That wouldn't  make a dent in the barrage of the pro Israel slant you get here. Even FOX gets honeymouthed when Israel in any shape or form is mentioned.

I don't watch much TV news, TV is just not a very time efficient way to get news, you can watch all day and learn less than you can find in half an hour on the internet. That said I have seen some good reporting on Al Jazheera, they ran a 5 part series on the Fukashima clean up which was very revealing and which the US media ignores, not because it is over but it just isn't "news". The Japanese have undertaken a massive effort which so far has had very little effect, radioactive water is still being released and radioactive dust is still blowing in the wind.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
