I use Contender carbine barrels in .17 HRM up to 150 yd. and .204 Ruger for longer shots.  I eally like their performance on woodchucks.  I used to have a Remington 700 in .17 Rem. that was also a great caliber.

I use a CZ in .204 for coyotes, with the lighter weight bullets.  Most shots are close, and the bullets go in and blow up, leaving no exit hole.  I also like carrying this rifle / cartridge combo around for summer woodchuck when I don't feel like lugging the heavy Remington 700 22/250 around.  Inside 300 yards or so, it seems to kill just as quick with either the 32 or 40 grain bullets as the 22/250 does with 55's, with less recoil and blast.

I hear a lot of good things about the 204. I've thought hard about something in 17. Especially since I can buy 17HMR right now and still can't find any 22LR or 22 MAG local. Even thought about the little 17mach 2. I have been kicking around getting something in the smaller cal world mostly in the realm of reloadable smaller cases which use less powder. Nothing wrong with lower recoil and lower noise either. I have plenty of mule kicking ear splitting stuff already ;D What kind of damage does the 204 do to the hide ?

Most all of my shooting is at prairie dogs. Prairie dogs gets muzzle blast smart so I like  the 17 HM2, 17 HMR, 17 Hornet ,17 Fireball, 17 Remington ,and 204 Ruger. cartridge varmint rifles.   I like the low recoil of the 17 and 20  caliber rifles that lets me see the hits thru the scope.  I have 22 LR , 22 WMR, 22 Hornet, 221 Fireball, 222 Rem, 223 Rem, 22-250 Rem, and 220 Swift rifles but don't use them very much  for p dog  shooting since getting the sub 22 caliber rifles.
