Question for Tim or Anyone Else That Knows
« on: February 26, 2014, 10:00:10 PM »
I think I know the answer but i am going to ask anyway. Will the old model Topper 58 barrel in 30-30 fit the newer SB2 frame? Thanks in advance.

Maybe yes maybe no...  Sorry I cannot be more specific. The early 158/058/48 where wider. Later barrels should fit with minor fitting.

I have a one late 158 with walnut and snap forend, but a button barrel release and plastic TG that WILL fit current SB2. (I just fit it to my 20ga shorty receiver)  I hve another with a older, walnut and steel 158 thats a no go. Two 48's one 410 and another 16ga that are also too wide to fit. I'm speaking of the barrel block. This is too wide to fit current and recent SB2 receivers. I have a few that will not fit, so I know for 100% sure.  Only way to know, is to try or measure and check your specific barrel.

My experience is like CWs. My older model 158s with the profiled barrels do not fit any of my 4 sb2 frames. I have 2 model 58 20 ga barrels they don't fit either. There is a Hugh gap between the barrel a receiver

My old Topper with the slim barrel does fit nicely on one of my sb2 receivers.  I haven't fired it on there so I don't know how it would shoot, but it fits well.  It won't even come close on a couple of others I have.  So the answer is a definite maybe.  44 Man

I'm adding. My SB2s are CBA
Serial numbers not HX or NX

I have an early M158 barrel with ¼-28 threaded forend stud on an NC SB2 frame, it fit fine with minimal adjustments. The M58(058) was made 1975-86 as a combo 30-30 or 22 Hornet and 20ga according to the BBGV. I had a complete 1972 M158 30-30 at one time, the barrel on it wouldn't come close to fitting any of the 2 dozen SB2 frames I had at the time without some major work on the pivot, way more than I've ever had to do.

Mine does, but it's now a 30-40 Krag.  ;)

This is an older picture, but I still use the strap to hold the forend on.  It's got the old bayonet style underlug for snap-on forends.  8)
