3.5 inch 20 ga shells?
« on: February 27, 2014, 09:47:58 AM »
anyone ever play around with the 20 ga 3.5 inches shells or maybe a USH reamed out to the 3.5 inch slugs?  Not really big on the 20 ga and seems like it would be in line with a 12 ga at that point, but the 3.5 inch slugs maybe a little different. sorry been a long winter here in the north, and spend ALOT of time reading about guns (do they write about anything esle ??? ) Just a FYI for all you winter crybabies, its going to be -25 here tonight with wind chills of -45 and more snow coming over the next two day :o

a4,

I looked into this a few months back as I was thinking maybe I could ream my 20ga USH to 3.5" and get a bit better throat.  The problem is that I couldn't find 3.5" hulls.  I was told by a couple of dedicated slug shooters that the 3.5" were made for Hasting by Brenneke and are out of print.

I have your weather but it is only going to be about -12F tonight.  They are predicting 6 to 12 inches of snow sometime between Saturday night and Monday morning.

There is a lot of Space in a 3" 20 ga hull.
If you want to increase payload, shooting a longer projectile or a heavier one cut open a slug, and look at the amount of space that the wad(s) take up in the hull.
I have made a few joke 12 ga shells with black powder componets, so many grains of green dot, an over the powder card, glitter or confetti, and over the shot card, 1 ounce of shot and another over the shot card and crimp.  The glitter looks great at night and there is enough shot to break birds.
But I digress in you can load powder for a 1.25 ounce 3" load and use over the powder cards, and place in a long 1.25 ounce  other than lead projectile in a Sabot or have lead rings to lock int othe lands and grooves if you want a longer projectiole, heavier, and better BC than the current loadings.
