Why 4227?
« on: February 28, 2014, 10:46:39 PM »
When I started reloading for handguns, Bill (Greybeard) told me all I needed was Unique and 2400 and for years I have been completely happy with that advice!   ;D

Now, I will admit I have added H110 (originally for the 500 S&W) and Trail Boss to that list, but I probably could live without both.   ;)  I guess handloaders just got to try new stuff!   ;D

Which brings us to the subject at hand.  I see a lot of people rave about 4227.  I also noticed that Load Data shows loads using it right up there in number with 2400 and 110.   :-\

Can y'all tell me why you like 4227 compared to the other two? ???

H4227 gives me the best velocity and accuracy in my 357 Herrett with 180 grain slugs.  Accuracy especially can't be equaled with anything else I've tried yet.  Since it is no longer available and my supply is just about gone I ain't real happy.  Never was worth spit in anything else though.

From one Dick to another,

I load IMR 4227 in the following calibers:

.223 AR-15
.243 HR
.270 Win
30-30 Win
38 Spc
357 Mag
45 Colt

There are others.  Now that"s commonality!

The nearest cartridge I ever had that could use 4227 was the 44 Rem Mag.

I may have had a can of that stuff many years ago but don't recall for sure. Or I borrowed some.
I found out the H-110 gave better results and that is the powder I use and once I run out of my present supply I have W 296 on hand.
