Personally I'm up in the air on this caliber debate. When looking at the three main choices, ie., 9mm, 40 S&W and .45acp I can't help but think how puny the 9mm looks in comparison.
All the rag writers now say it makes no difference which you use as terminal performance is basically the same.
I like to see lots of expansion no matter which is used. I guess deep down inside I don't truly trust the .45acp to expand especially the slower 230s. I know they show nicely expanded bullets in articles but that's shot usually into either water, ballistic gel or water soaked paper. Deep in the back of my mind I wonder would that work in flesh?
I look at those little bullets from the .380 and 9mm and ask myself is that really enough bullet to get the job done? I don't have an answer.
So I kinda personally trust the .40 most. It has the large diameter but also enough velocity to make them expand to larger size.
Still more often than not these days I find a 9mm single stack S&W Shield with 8 round mag plus a back up mag on my hip more than any other. I still feel better with the full size S&W M&P .40 on my hip but find I carry it less and the Shield more.
The only critter of any sort I've ever shot with a .45 was long, long ago when I shot a dog. I can't remember if I was using hardball or cast SWC bullets, hardball I think tho. The last thing I remember was that dog running wide open and making more racket than a elephant in a china shop. That image is stick stuck in my head 50 years later and so I rarely ever actually carry either of my .45acps.
