Bought A New Catfish/Crappie Boat Today
« on: November 07, 2019, 04:46:15 PM »
Sold my side by side, and bought a new 16'X48" Lowe flat bottom with a 25 horse 4 stroke Mercury motor.
My goal? Stalkin cats and crappie. Gonna mount a couple a comfortable seats, and 6 rod holders. Can't wait to go pick it up Monday.

A fellow has to have a hobby, there are sure worse choices than fishing. I can just ride my JD Gator down to the pond at the front of my property and fish for catfish and crappie. Don't even need a boat, I can cast to the entire pond from the banks and the peninsula banks.

Well Bill, I used to have 5 or 6 private lakes I could fish, but Dallas folks have bought up the property in recent years, and turned'em into their own little weekend paradise. They are all now adorned with "private property keep out" signs.

That boat will be just the ticket for chasing crappies. I'm stuck with hard water fishing for about 6 months and I'm gettin' to old to chisel a hole in the ice big enough for a boat ;D

Now that is a big boat.  congrats.
We are about to move to Fl. so I can fish all winter and pick tomatoes in January.
But I'm a bank fisherman.

I like bank fishin too,  but this is a lawn chair boat when you anchor up. I've wanted one like this for years.
We like catfish, crappie, and perch.

I like bluegill filets and my wife likes catfish filets, both of which are abundant in Fl.
I really enjoyed my 14 footer, but the last time I used it I nearly fell in the lake.
So I sold it for the safer lawn chair. :)  And it was not close to the size of yours.

I don't filet bluegill. I de-scale'em, cut the heads off,  gut'em, and told'em in cornmeal.
When you pull'em out of the deep fryer pull the dorcel fin off and the meat falls off.
I like the crisp tails.

Yup Dan, that's how I do bream, crappie and bass all. Catfish I skin and cook whole if small enough to fit the pot, otherwise cut them smaller.

In my pond I have bass, catfish, crappie and bream, both bluegill and shell cracker plus fathead minnows for a food source.

You boy's are makin me homesick! If you look at my Avatar, you'll see a boat probably like the one Dan has. Boat belonged to my Brother, and we were fishing a  small southern Arkansas lake full of big Florida strain largemouth. The one I caught in the pic weighed 10 lbs. We weighed her and put her back, but the eatin fish we took home were Crappie and Bream. Crappie is my #1 fish period to eat, and all kinds of Brim a close second.Cat,is right up there too.

You fellas in the south have the best warm water fishing lakes in the US (IMO)

Lake Erie perch and small walleyes with fresh cut fries and coleslaw are the standard table fare here. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but I sometimes have a couple with this meal.

wife likes her perch. Me ill take walleye or pike any day over perch but it has to be caught in cold water. Big difference in pike caught in the great lakes compared to a small inland lake that isn't spring fed. But cold water pike fileted by someone that can really do it (not me) is the best fresh water fish in my opinion.

Good deal on the new boat. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

I'm SERIOUSLY fishing waters challenged here on the western edge of the south plains. That's defined as little to none. The country club used to have a nice lake for the members and their families to fish in and my SIL is a member. I have a 2 man bass boat and we used to hit that little lake several afternoons a week in warm weather. The boat has two swivel seats and we would put a 5 gallon bucket upside down between the seats for his son to sit on. Spray mosquito repellent all over each other and have a fun evening. Strictly catch and release so they would be there for the next trip. The lake was full of bass and some huge bluegill. It even had a couple of catfish around 3' long that would hit a lure now and then and either could pull that little boat around until the line frayed and broke. A few years ago the country club drained the lake and added 9 more holes to the golf course and my little bass boat has been in the barn with a tarp over it since that happened.

I fixed up a old Fiberglass Boat form the late 60s last year. Has a 50HP Old Chrysler on it. Really a nice running cool looking Vintage Boat.
That said I rarely use it for fishing. Mostly take the Grandkids for a spin now and then.
I catch way more fish from the Banks. I caught probably 70 to 80 Legal size Walleyes Bank fishing the Loup River here in Nebraska this year. I never have been able to catch the elusive Walleye from a Boat at all. Caught three yesterday. Bank Fishing. May be my last try as Winter is coming fast here in Nebraska. But it is supposed to be in the 40s later this week, so I may Brave that and go out again.
Good Luck fishing from you new Boat. Have fun.
