Back to the woods.....
« on: November 20, 2019, 03:02:22 PM »
Saturday will make the 48th year I've headed to the woods in search of wily whitetail. With the exception of my first 2 years I've carried a lever action. I started with a Marlin 30-30 I got for my 14th birthday and carried that for about 6 years till I bought a 35 Rem (Marlin). If I had put a nick in the stock for every deer it's taken there wouldn't be a lot of walnut left. Feeding a young family through the 80's with an overpopulation of deer, I filled as many tags as I could to keep the freezer full. I decided I needed a 45-70 for bear about 10 years back and kinda' retired the 35. I've been using the 45-70 for deer since I bought it. It speaks with authority and usually leads to a tracking job of 18 inches straight down, plus you can eat right up to the bullet hole. But this year I'm feeling nostalgic and my old 35 is headed north with me. I never feel under gunned with it in the swamps of northern WI  and as I'm getting older it's a heck of a light lighter to carry. Just ramblin'

The 35 is always a winner. Good luck to you, hoping the weather will break for Saturday morning.

Good luck to you also. I'll be leaving in a couple hours to set up camp and do a little bow hunting before the opener. The million acre swamp in Price county is calling my name. The wife is tired of all my gear sitting in the way so it's time to go.

I've just recently discovered the .35 caliber and over the last few years there has been a different .35 in my deer season arsenal every year. My girls went to my camp last weekend and cleaned and stocked me up with supplies. I've still got a bunch of things to get ready, but hoping to be in camp by noon on the 29th. Pennsylvania's Saturday opener this year has really messed with my routine, but it will allow me to hunt Ohio's Monday opener, which is a big plus.  8)

Back outa' the woods. My old 35 Rem did came out of retirement with a bang, so to speak.  Sunday morning a little 6 pointer showed up under my stand and a 200gr handload closed my season. The date on the reload box said 1999. The buck was standing almost straight at me at 30 yards, when he put his head down I touched one off for where the head meets the neck. No wasted meat but the bullet did cut off an antler on the way in. When I registered him for the buck pool I said he's either a 6 point with about a 12 inch spread or a 4 point with an 8 foot spread cuz' that's where I found the other horn. We came home early from camp because we had 10" of snow Wednesday and they're talking another 10" today. Looks like it's gonna' be a long hard winter for the deer herd this year.

I'd not be surprised if some of my reloaded .35 Rem ammo is that old. I sure haven't loaded any in a very long time but do have a fair supply of such ammo laid up. I've heard rumors they work with factory ammo also but am not sure I've ever used any to try out that rumor.

I have never noticed any degradation in ammo that was loaded many years ago. I once shot some 30-30 factory ammo made in the thirties and every round went off and sounded right. The group was a little big but it was factory ammo ;D .
