After buying a Marlin 336CB 38-55 last summer I've become a Marlin convert. I love the balance and the fit of this rifle. I've shot the best offhand (2 1/8") and benchrest (7/8")100yd, 5 shot groups I've ever shot with iron sights. (ain't saying I can do it on demand)
I shoot lever action silhouette. For pistol cartridge, I've been using a Rossi 92 rifle, 44-40. It is more than accurate enough, more accurate than the 22 I use for the small bore class. Yet my small bore scores are 12-13 points higher. The Rossi and I are just not a team. I attribute this to the fact the Rossi is muzzle heavy, too much drop in the stock and maybe the lock time. This will be my first year competing with the 38-55 and I expect to shoot it as well or better than the 22.
I want a Marlin to replace the Rossi. Here is the rub, Marlin isn't making the rifle I want, in the caliber I want, though I think they have in the past.
I don't want a 32HR Mag! I don't want a 44Mag! I want either a 25-20, 32-20 or a 44-40! I want an octagon barrel, full length magazine. How readily availalbe are they? What price range? Would it be feasible to rechamber a 44Mag to 44-40? Only you great Marlin gurus can help me.
