Aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has entered the Persian Gulf, moving opposite central Iran’s southern coastline.
According to the intelligence and security news website DEBKAfile, the U.S. and Iran are now ramping up their preparations for war.
The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln moved into the Persian Gulf for the first time since it arrived in the region in May. The carrier and its strike group have transited the Strait of Hormuz and is now operating in the gulf waters opposite central Iran’s southern coastline.
However, the Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain claims the move had nothing to do with Iran, but with providing assistance to the Operation Inherent Resolve mission against ISIS. A press release from the Fifth Fleet states the Lincoln began providing “close air support operations and defensive counter air support operations” last Friday.
The carrier’s commanding officer, Capt. Walt Slaughter, said:
“The Lincoln team is on station and supporting the combatant commander upon arrival due to the diligence and professionalism of our crew and strike group counterparts. As we navigate throughout the theater, we will exercise our vast capabilities and interoperability with international partners, as a mobile and lethal force. We are the tip of the spear, and we will continue to work with our coalition allies to ensure regional security.”
But this move also comes as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami threatened Israel, the U.S., Saudi Arabia, and the UK. He said those countries were fueling violent protests in his country, adding:
“We have shown restraint—we have shown patience towards the hostile moves of America, the Zionist regime, and Saudia Arabia against the Islamic Republic of Iran. But, if you cross our red line, we will destroy you. We will not leave any move unanswered. If Iran decides to respond, the enemy will not have security anywhere. Our patience has a limit.”
DEBKAfile, however, reports that its military sources have found a clue to Iran’s next moves in Soleimani’s assertion that Iran’s patience has a limit. Saturday, U.S. Central Command chief Gen. Kenneth McKenzie predicted Iran will probably launch another attack in the Middle East.
