I talked to an old man today

I talked to a man today

I talked with a man today, an 80+-year-old man. I asked him if there was anything I can get him while this Coronavirus scare was gripping America.

He simply smiled, looked away and said:

"Let me tell you what I need! I need to believe, at some point, this country my generation fought for... I need to believe this nation we handed safely to our children and their children...

I need to know this generation will quit being a bunch of sissies...that they respect what they've been given...that they've earned what others sacrificed for."

I wasn't sure where the conversation was going or if it was going anywhere at all. So, I sat there, quietly observing.

"You know, I was a little boy during WWII. Those were scary days. We didn't know if we were going to be speaking English, German or Japanese at the end of the war. There was no certainty, no guarantees like Americans enjoy today.

And no home went without sacrifice or loss. Every house, up and down every street, had someone in harm's way. Maybe their Daddy was a soldier, maybe their son was a sailor, maybe it was an uncle. Sometimes it was the whole damn family...fathers, sons, uncles...

Having someone, you love, sent off to war...it wasn't less frightening than it is today. It was scary as Hell. If anything, it was more frightening. We didn't have battlefront news. We didn't have email or cellphones. You sent them away and you hoped...you prayed. You may not hear from them for months, if ever. Sometimes a mother was getting her son's letters the same day Dad was comforting her over their child's death.

And we sacrificed. You couldn't buy things. Everything was rationed. You were only allowed so much milk per month, only so much bread, toilet paper. EVERYTHING was restricted for the war effort. And what you weren't using, what you didn't need, things you threw away, they were saved and sorted for the war effort. My generation was the original recycling movement in America.

And we had viruses back then...serious viruses. Things like polio, measles, and such. It was nothing to walk to school and pass a house or two that was quarantined. We didn't shut down our schools. We didn't shut down our cities. We carried on, without masks, without hand sanitizer. And do you know what? We persevered. We overcame. We didn't attack our President, we came together. We rallied around the flag for the war. Thick or thin, we were in it to win. And we would lose more boys in an hour of combat than we lose in entire wars today."

He slowly looked away again. Maybe I saw a small tear in the corner of his eye. Then he continued:

"Today's kids don't know sacrifice. They think sacrifice is not having coverage on their phone while they freely drive across the country. Today's kids are selfish and spoiled. In my generation, we looked out for our elders. We helped out with single moms whose husbands were either at war or dead from war. Today's kids rush the store, buying everything they can...no concern for anyone but themselves. It's shameful the way Americans behave these days. None of them deserve the sacrifices their granddads made.

So, no I don't need anything. I appreciate your offer but, I know I've been through worse things than this virus. But maybe I should be asking you, what can I do to help you? Do you have enough pop to get through this, enough steak? Will you be able to survive with 113 channels on your tv?"

I smiled, fighting back a tear of my own...now humbled by a man in his 80's. All I could do was thank him for the history lesson, leave my number for emergency and leave with my ego firmly tucked in my rear.

I talked to a man today. A real man. An American man from an era long gone and forgotten. We will never understand the sacrifices. We will never fully earn their sacrifices. But we should work harder to learn about them..learn from them...to respect them.

Met in prayer and His presence with believers last Friday night and over the last days and weeks several of us were brought to this mindset, that we can rise to this event, because they did not die in vain, they gave their all, as did our Savior.

Wife dropped off a couple boxes of food at the salvation army Monday. Old guy was running it instead of the girl that usually there. He told her he relieved the girl. Said if someone was going to die over this it shouldn't be a young women with a family. She also had a box for the place the old people gather every week for a lunch. There was a sign on the door to bring all donations to the salvation army to feed the YOUNG people who needed it more then they did. When she brought that box back to the salvation army the old guy said "I see you saw my sign" Even he isn't stupid enough to "Meet with believers" though. THe door is locked and theres a sign on the door to knock. He comes to the door and asks you what you want boxes it up and sits in outside the door for you to pick up. Hes brave but NOT STUPID! He isn't so arrogant as to TEST GOD!

You know for a fact he didn't. Do your remember Sodom and Gomorrah by chance. Do you remember what he did when he closed the sea he parted for moses?? The great flood?? God has purged whole civilizations in the past. Im sure hes at least looking at how people are dealing with this and for sure shaking his head at people who would risk there friends and family and fellow parishioners to put on a show for others so they can brag that they have faith. I don't have to prove to you I have faith by being stupid and risking other peoples lives. Only one I answer to is Jesus Christ. I sure don't need to hold hands with 30 people on sunday to do that answering. What you do is no different then those stupid college kids on the beach and at frat parties thumbing there nose at this virus. You thing God agrees with them? Not much of it around you?? Id bet someone in NYC said that at one time too! I hope I don't have to congradulate you or one of your kids or grandkids for being the first in your county! Get your head out of your !!! before you kill someone. Smoke your dope by yourself for a few months! Your commune can get back together when its over! That you would even consider risking someone elses life shows how self centered and selfish you really are. Sins pal! My guess is if Jesus was here today he would tell you to do what you have to to protect others because what you do to the least of my brother___________! Hed tell you that prayer you say at home is JUST as powerful as the one you said together.

it was a reply to goodshot claim God didn't do this. In one post God does everything and controls everything (which I do believe) then when something like this happens some claim he would never do it. News flash!! He did. Only thing that's in doubt is why! MAYBE part of it is to rid us of the nut cases that are so arrogant that they think they can go to church and god will put some kind of magic shield around them and doing so that they cant infect someone else. Then coming here and bragging that there endangering others! Maybe hes  just getting rid of stupid. The arrogance that make them think they KNOW what God is thinking or what or why he does things is insanity. No smarter then those kids on the beach in FL or frat houses having corona parties thumbing there nose at the power of GOD!

Thanks again Charlie, you raise the standard for GBO with your posts, scripture indicates those who do so are doing His will and will be rewarded on that day, those who do not are "kicking against the goads".
Dr. Leaf's lifetime of work, and all the others who work in the area of neural-plasticity recognize that a lifetime of projecting out one's own self detestation can bring the end result of extreme bitterness, times like this in the world will expose  the troubled ones.
Those who are grounded and stable will continue to walk in the Galatians 5 attributes.

.  Charlie; good post!  Goodshot..  IMO, it may or may not have been God's , we just don't know for sure, but we can all take it as a warning.
Surely, it seems we as a nation are wandering closer to the chasm, but then ancient Israel, wandered along like a drunken man..sometimes walking closely to God, sometimes far away...and He didn't punish then EVERY time they strayed.

The flood, the plagues on Egypt and the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah were movements by God, but they were quite rare. If you will note, in each case the pain fell upon the perpetrators alone.

Truth be known, God doesn't have to punish anybody or any nation..all he has to do is remove his protection, and let Satan do his work.

In any case, it is a good time for believers work toward understanding.
