Catholics allowed to eat meat on Lenten Fridays
Elisha Fieldstadt

‎March‎ ‎27‎, ‎2020‎ ‎12‎:‎18‎ ‎PM

Some Roman Catholic bishops around the country are relieving the faithful of giving up meat on Fridays since they're already deprived of some foods and other pleasures during the coronavirus pandemic.

During Lent, the about six weeks between Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday, many Catholics practice self-denial and sacrifice as they repent their sins and pray in preparation for Easter. Some choose certain pleasures to give up for the full 40 days, and all Christians are instructed not to eat meat on Ash Wednesday, and all Fridays during Lent in addition to Good Friday.

But some bishops this year are telling their parishioners that they've given up enough as the coronavirus pandemic denies many people of gatherings, outside entertainment and everyday conveniences. While churches are holding online masses, many Catholics are also lamenting missing church during the holy season.

Others bishops loosened the guidance noting that many foods are hard to come by on picked-over grocery shelves, and that going out to shop for specific foods could jeopardize people's health.

"Given the difficulties of obtaining some types of food and the many other sacrifices we are suddenly experiencing given the coronavirus, I have granted a dispensation from abstaining from meat on Fridays for the rest of Lent, except Good Friday, which is universal law," the Most Rev. James F. Checchio, the bishop of Metuchen in Piscataway, New Jersey, announced on Thursday.

New Jersey is the second worst-hit state in the country, with nearly 6,900 cases as of Friday, according to the state's health department. Middlesex County, where Piscataway is, has 505 cases.

The Most Rev. Nicholas DiMarzio, the bishop of Brooklyn, said on March 20 that Catholics in the borough did not have to abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent this year. "This is being done to assist people who may have difficulties in shopping for food or other reasons, which would make this practice difficult at this time," he said in a statement.

New York state has over 37,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with more than 21,000 of them in New York City.

In Louisiana, where the case growth-rate is staggering and the death toll is among the highest in the country, the Rev. Shelton J. Fabre of Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes said Thursday that parishioners did not have to give up meat on Fridays because coronavirus has "obtaining food, including meal alternatives from meat, the rising cost of fish and other forms of seafood, and even the challenge of being able to obtain groceries without endangering their health, make it clearly difficult for them to fulfill this practice."

Fabre encouraged the faithful to continue giving up meat on Fridays, if they could.

Lafourche Parish is about 50 miles from New Orleans, which has nearly 1,000 of the state's more than 2,300 cases. The high number is being attributed o Mardi Gras.

The Most Rev. David Zubik, the bishop of the diocese of Pittsburgh, also said on March 20 that the faithful could eat meat on Lenten Fridays, except Good Friday. “As you are aware, many of the shelves and cases in our supermarkets are sparse if not empty,” Zubik said.

The Most Rev. Peter J. Uglietto, of the archdiocese of Boston, echoed the message.

"At this time, we are called to make the best of what we have at hand or is available for purchase. Many people are using what they have stored in their freezers and on their shelves," he said.

"In support of the efforts to limit further transmission of the virus we have all been asked to give up many of the everyday activities we take for granted, including our usual participation in the life of the Church," Uglietto said. "In light of these circumstances, Cardinal Seán is dispensing all Catholics in the Archdiocese from the obligation of abstaining from meat during the remaining Fridays of Lent."

Uglietto still encouraged those who could take part of the sacrificial practice to do so "and to offer it up for those who are suffering in any way from the pandemic we are experiencing."

This is good news for those still practicing religion, very heartening also that they can also go to G-d without a mediator as Jesus made possible 2000+ years ago. Many of our "religions" will be changed, on the same day the earth quake knocked out the trumpet in Salt Lake City, the apparitions at Medjugorje came to an end. What a wonderful time to walk in His love, joy, peace, etc. and walk our His plan for our lives.

ITS GETTING WORSE!! What the heck kind of nut case rambling is this! I think I might even be wrong of my opinion of you. Maybe your not just trying to impress everyone with flowery words. I think you have a much more serious problem!! You have to have some awful nervous neighbors!!  What does a single word of this post have to do with eating meat on Friday. By the way I had corona virus isolation shrimp for supper last night. ;D By the way theres plenty of fish around here. Commercial fisherman have plenty and the stores are even well stocked in things like fish sticks and shrimp ect. its the beef section of the meat market that's the barest.

Thank you Charlie, I admire your hunger for the things of G-d and your willingness to share His gospel in these last of the last days.
As Jesus told us clearly, a tree is known by its fruit, a good tree brings forth good fruit, and that is what you do, friend.

Thanks Ray, Lloyd has had this shared with him many, many times. We should continue for his good as he is a member of a church that sells religion and seems to oppose relationship with the Lord and Savior.
A lifetime of wrong teaching takes a while to work through, but we know He is willing, the problems of this world are never from up there.

Charlie:
"Before Vatican II, Catholics were required to abstain from meat every Friday, as a form of penance in honor of the death of Jesus Christ on the Cross on Good Friday. Since Catholics are normally allowed to eat meat, this prohibition is very different from the dietary laws of the Old Testament or of other religions (such as Islam) today."---------------------------------------------------
Now it depends on how closely you follow church doctrine.
During Lent those who are strong in faith will do so out of honor to Jesus sacrifice.

Ok, you bunch of freaking children, ENOUGH.

I am DONE, I have way to much on my plate to have to baby sit you all, and none of you seem to be able to act like adults.

I did not create this site for you all to have a pissing contest or to see who has the biggest pecker, nor did I create it for you to argue over shıt that is, has been, and always will be a matter of faith.

Not one single one of you can PROVE that your way is the RIGHT way, nor can you PROVE others way is the WRONG way.

This post was started by someone who clearly does not like cathloics, muslims, buddist, hindus or any other religion besides their own. So to me that means this post was only made to stir the pot.  Even though I know the OP will say that was not the purpose, ok whatever, the comments that followed sure as hěll were.

goodshot, I am calling you out in public forum, DO NOT REPORT ANOTHER Damņ post as a personal attack when all you do is stir shıt up with Lloyd. I am sick of checking my email and seeing reported posts when you clearly baited, instigated or otherwise incited the comments that were made.

Also, though I do not agree with him on some things or his chosen religion, Lloyd is the only person posting on this site who has contributed to it monetarily with his T-shirt purchase. He is also kept his cool much better than I would have had I been in that situation during some of the barrages you guys have thrown at him, I think he kinda likes it to honest as I think most of you like the bickering that goes on, otherwise you would have stopped it already.

Seeing how this is not a money making venture for me anyway, I am going to give it to GB to do with what he wants, I am done dealing with all this nonsense.  I have had enough of the buŀŀcrap. You guys don't seem to want to help anyone anyway, all you want to do is bicker about religion. Well that is why I am not religious, and I am sure there are many other who feel the same.

***************************** NOTICE ***************************************************
Hence forth if I see a post that I construe as being an attack on any other member no matter how subtle I will be permanently banning whom ever makes the attack. Grow up, act like you got some sense, stop feeling the need to berate others and share your knowledge, thoughts and feelings unless you need to put down others to do it.

"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith."
"For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth."

Many of you have no clue how to LOVE everyone, be Joyful by choice nor do you want peace and I don't think longsuffering is in any of your wheelhouses, but that's my opinion only, gentleness and goodness are to subjective to address and faith, well what do you really put your faith in, is it really God? or is it your religion?

So, if you want to leave, don't let the door hit you where the dog should have bit you.

Charlie, then might I ask what was the intent of the post?

I know that you yourself are not catholic, so what was the purpose of the post?

If it was not to stir the pot then fine, as I said the replies that followed were.

Continue to pray for me, I have no problem with that.

MATT. That is why. Just because I don't believe as Catholics do doesn't mean that I don't have feelings for their beliefs. I wanted the Catholics here to be able to eat meat without feeling guilty. CHARLIE.  :( :(

Charlie, and you really think that you are that far ahead of the practicing catholics that you know what they can do before they are passed on such info?

I will not argue with you over this, though I may think differently I will take your word for it.

I will not be responding to this thread any further, I said what I wanted to say and now you folks can do as you wish, bash each other all you want, I am going to pretend this forum does not exist, I will not be responding to reported posts so do not bother reporting any.

if you followed Charlie through the years youd know one thing is FACT. Anything he says about Catholics is an up front attack or a back door attack. His hate for Catholics goes right to his core. You know hes lying and so does everyone else here. Most of all GOD knows! He may fool a few rednecks here but he isn't fooling the one the counts. I find it comical that he would even use the excuse that hes trying to help and inform Catholics what the catholic church says. About as helpful as me telling is 100 or so like minded people out of the billions on earth that the bible is that black book sitting next to your seat in church. Just in case you think someone from another church might feel the need to point that out to you ;)

Just remember to mention that they should also open the Bible and read it.
