Eating while moving
« on: May 21, 2020, 11:28:09 AM »
I've been looking at different things to eat while  E&E'ing for quite a long while, and recently considered some thick foil packaged tuna I saw at the store. I should say right here that I personally can't stand tuna, but the DR told me to start eating it, so I do. Anyway, I thought those pouches might be an option for throwing in the pack for an emergency bite to eat while on the move. They're packaged really well, and I think they'd hold up well in the pack. The drawback so far is the crappy taste of the varieties I've tried. I bought the deli style tuna salad, and the ranch, and the lemon pepper. I was disappointed in the lemon pepper most of all because I was sure it would be half decent, but it was probably the worst out of what I tried. I guess something that tastes objectionable would be a whole lot better than an empty stomach, but I'll keep looking for something decent. Just me, I'd say save your money if there's something better to be had

I tried the sweet and spicy, and it's more
or less about the same as the others. It'd
be something to eat on an empty stomach
is about as I could say for it

I like the ranch tuna packets for hiking meals.

I'm not a fan of tuna but do make a tuna/egg salad for my wife's sake and it's not bad, but, canned tuna is much better than the pouch variety.
I can see throwing some canned tuna in the pack along with a steel spoon.  I think most tuna has the pull tab lids and you can maybe use the can for something.

If you're in a tight, you could clean
out the can and use it to boil water
if stealth wasn't a consideration.
I've not found too many things
a person could eat without breaking
stride that would store and carry
well other than bars and peanut butter

Would energy bars and breakfast bars have more food value that tuna??  I'm guessing yes.

I still like the mustard sardines,  and the smoked oysters with saltine crackers.

I honestly don't know.
My whole deal is to eventually find some
kind of something I can keep in a
dedicated pack that has a good shelf
life and durable packaging that I could
sustain myself with if I were presented
with the need to evacuate wherever I'm
at in a discrete manner.
There wouldn't be any opportunity to
stop and leisurely build a campsite and
a comfortable fire. I'd be steadily walking
toward my goal, and the only stops
would be waste evacuation and canteen
refilling and adding water purification, and
starting off again.

Now I can DO some mustard sardines.   I've eaten smoked oysters and didn't care much for them.

About once a year I buy a can and my wife leaves the room while I eat, and then won't kiss me until I brush my teeth. :)

I've had some of the oysters.
To me, they're only tolerable
with crackers,  but having a
food that isn't first choice can
be a good thing. It'll most likely
be there when you're really
hungry and your other choice
is a tree bark and johnson
grass sandwich

Smoked oysters and sardines are OK, but I like the Kipper snacks much better. No skin, no bones, no guts..just Lightly smoked and tasty filets..  Check the package on seafoods carefully, some come from the far east, and you wouldn't want to eat them if you could see them raised !  There are various trade names, such as King Oscar etc.

I'd rather go hungry than eat tuna or salmon either for that matter and sardines, I don't even want to be in the same zip code when a can of those is opened.

A trail mix of dried fruit, nuts and maybe some sweets like M&Ms or some such or an energy bar is more to my liking.

I like the mustard sardines and smoked oysters too. I'm a big fan of kipper snacks also. Bar Harbor is my go to brand for kippers, they're caught in the Gulf of Maine and canned just over the border in Canada. Sadly there are no sardine canneries left in the US.
