Hi, I just ordered a brand new Ultra Varmit Rifle in .223 last week and am waiting to get it. I have shot many different rifles but this is the first one that will be mine. I was just wondering if anyone out there has this and how they shoot and what you use yours for, pictures would be cool too.

I was also wondering if anyone has this rifle in 45/70. I read that handi-rifle barrels work in the ultras. I shot a marlin lever action 45/70 and loved it but they are expensive so i was thinking of getting a 45/70 barrel down the road.

Thanks and I would appriciate any other info you would like to share about the ultras.

I have the Ultra Varmint 223 myself. When you get it clean it good and feed it a supply of Winchester bulk pack ammo from Walmart. 45 JHP, 3600 FPS and like 12.00 for a 40 round box. Mine is shooting below MOA at 50 yards. I need to shoot it at 100 and 200 if I can get some spare time. Enjoy that new gun. The 45-70 is very accurate from what I have heard. I know my 450 Ultra Hunter is very accurate.

I think your going to like your Handi when it comes in.there is a welth of info here at GBO for the taking.Lots of the guys here have both barrels you asked about and I'm sure you'll see just how good they can be.I have the 308 Survivor and a Marlin 1895GS in 45-70...I love them both.

Welcome. I have shot two 223's of my son's and I pick up my new Ultra Varmint 223 Sat. Looking forward to it. The Win Value pak is the best deal going for factory loads in the Handi's. Very hard to beat with reloads. I think I may have it but have to wait for the trorms to leave to find out for sure.

Welcome, and thanks for joining us.

For a guy that's new to H+R/NEF, you've already made some great choices. I have the Ultra-Varmnt for a month now, and just love it. I sold my Marlin 1895GG 45/70, and bought the H+R Buffalo Classic 45/70, so your not missing out on anything, buying one of these rifles. You can have many different barrels added to your Ultra-Varmint frame, just by sending it back to H+R/NEF to be fitted. The barrels are very reasonable, as are the rifles. Let us know how you like your new rifle!

That's the only bad part of ordering a new rifle. While your waiting, take a look at some of the faq listed on top of this forum, or presented in the postings of other members. I had learned a bunch of tips from these guys, before my guns ever been shot. Stop looking at the clock!

I've been following threads about the H&R/NEF for over a year now. I have no trouble saying that the 45-70 is quite possibly the favorite chambering of H&R owners. Not once have I seen a post that degraded the the rifle in that chambering. Everyone who has posted about it likes it, and shoots their gun regularly. This is what made me decide to get an H&R in 45-70 even though I had long ago decided that I would not have another rifle in that chambering. I guess the moral of the story is never say never.

Ditto on the Valu Packs; you may also want to check out the UltraMax 40gr NBT. They shoot about 1" lower at 200yds than the Winchesters, but I'm getting 1.5" or better at that distance with both. I like the UltraMax because the bullets expand VERY fast.

I'm also considering a big-bore for my receiver; I was looking at 45-70 or 450 Marlin. Sounds like people favor the 45-70? Anyway, good luck with your Ultra!

Well it doesn't look like I will be getting my new rifle for some time now. The guy that is ordering it for me says he is having a really hard time finding one. He said that all the places hes check are either out of stock or backordered but he said when he finds one he would let me know. It could be today or not for a few months. I'm tired of waiting all ready.

I'm petty sure I saw one on WWW.GUNBROKER.COM last night. Just go to the search and put H&R and they'll come up. I know there were like 4 or 5 ultras in a row.

Welcome to the board Illgotten.

I feel your pain for having to wait for your rifle. I do know that sometimes the gunshops, and or Walmart have to wait for a production run of a particular rifle in order to get some in stock. I ran into this problem when I wanted to order an Ultra in .308.

You might want to check on gunbroker.com or one of the other auction sites on the net for one. There should be plenty of .223 Ultras around.

Illgotten...I don't know if there's Gander Mt. store around your parts,,but they got my Ultra Varmint in a weeks time for me. They can check their other stores and the warehouse for you right over the phone or online.
If your dedicated to letting your guy with the FFL get it for you then that's good too....but if you want your gun now...you may need to check around.
And Gander is pretty reasonable on their cost,,maybe a bit higher than someone with less overhead,,,but I've bought both ways and it's not that much more.
