A question for the 1911 gurus

I have never given this any though before and really haven't done any research but can you switch calibers on a 1911 by just changing barrels, barrel bushings, magazines, and possible recoil springs? For example: turn a 45 ACP into a 9 MM or vise versa. I posted this question here in hopes that someone would see it and reply as the 1911 forum seems sorta dead right now.

Nope! Have to change slides minimum, I used to build 1911s and I've never attempted such a conversion.
Even with a slide change there would be other alterations necessary.

Thanks. Off the top of my head I thought it would almost like building a new gun but was curious to see if anyone had tried it.

If I wanted a 1911 style pistol in 9mm, I'd find a Belgian made Browning Hi-Power. I think it's a more reliable pistol if you can get past the 9mm round.
Seems they later made a few in 40.

I had one in .40, it worked just fine, but I sold it to my cousin. I'm sure your right about the 1911 slide.
For one thing the bolt faceing being a built in part of the slide would be to large for a 9mm.
