DISPELLING LASER MYTHS

Sometimes it seems there are more myths about laser sights than there are actual laser sights in use. Longtime firearms instructor and weapons/use of force SME Jeremy Stafford recently penned an article addressing some of those myths.

Among the misunderstandings and range lore he destroys with “truth bombs”:

• Laser sights (like the LaserGuard on the P320 above) are a crutch.

• Laser sights will fail when you need them most.

• Laser sights will work to intimidate bad guys into submission.

Dispelling myths about laser sights

One of CT’s green laser sights on an S&W M&P 2.0 – if you have own one of Smith & Wesson’s M&Ps (whatever the caliber), you should be feeding it properly with our M&P magazines.

• Laser sights will give my position away.

Those are just some examples. Here’s one of his points in its entirety:

MYTH:

“Laser sights will fail when you need them,” says the guy with a light on his gun. Where’s the eye-rolling emoji when you need it?

Look, making sure the laser sight has a good battery and is sighted-in correctly is completely up to the shooter. Most of the people spouting this myth are the same ones that don’t verify that their iron sights are even calibrated for their defensive ammunition. Don’t listen to them.

Is there a chance that it will fail? Sure, just like there is a chance that your white light and your red-dot sight will fail. That being said, if you maintain your equipment, the odds of any of those failing in a gunfight are minuscule.

H&K VP9 with laser

A laser-equipped H&K VP9 – which, you’ll be happy to know, can be fed with 10, 13, 15, 17, 20, and 32 round VP9 magazines!

You can read the rest of it on the CT blog if you’re so inclined.

Basement dwellers and the easily butt-hurt probably shouldn’t, though. Just sayin’.

I had a green lazer on my SIG AR. It had to be constantly checked as it drifted off with every firing session.

Same thing with m little BodyGard 380. S&W replaced it when it quick working altogether, but in reality all you can depend on it for is hoping the bad guy doesn't know that and remembers he has something better to do elsewhere.
Youthful enthusiasm is replaced by old age and treachery!

When I was younger I had, stress "had", a strong green laser on my 357 Handi-rifle (looked Tacti-cool and Badazz - neither of which are worth a hoot) and used to target the side of the neighbor's house after dark in order to verify the 75 yard range to target was a match between laser dot and reticle sight (rock solid).  Never found a practical use for it so took it off and put it away.  Still, I go outside some nights and for no good reason at all point it toward the stars. Go Figure.  Maybe it would work for killing hogs at night under feeder lights!  Got to try that.

I have a LaserMax on an LCP Custom.  So far it has been fine, but the user should practice with both sighting methods..just in case..

Yes the laser sight would betray your position, but in that case just don't use the laser sight.  ..But I expect that in most self defense situations, exposing ones position is a moot point.
