By Sam Dorman | Fox News

Immigration enforcement agents have uncovered a cross-border tunnel that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is saying could be the "most sophisticated" yet.

Stretching from San Luis, Ariz. to San Luis, Mexico, the smuggling passageway includes a fully developed ventilation system, electrical wiring and a rail system. According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), authorities discovered the tunnel in late July, before it could be completed.

Photos show the tunnel measured three feet wide and four feet high.

The discovery was made during an ongoing, multi-agency effort by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

“This appears to be the most sophisticated tunnel in U.S. history, and certainly the most sophisticated I’ve seen in my career,” Border Patrol Yuma Sector's Acting Chief Patrol Agent Carl Landrum said in a statement Thursday. “We will continue to work closely with our partners – Homeland Security Investigations and state and local agencies -- to provide the best national security possible.”

Earlier this year, authorities announced they had found the longest known border smuggling tunnel, which stretched from Tijuana to San Diego. The tunnel originated near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry and measured 4,309 feet long -- more than three-quarters of a mile. The next-longest tunnel in the U.S., discovered in San Diego in 2014, was 2,966 feet long.

In March, authorities located a tunnel containing a variety of drugs -- including about 1,300 pounds of cocaine, 17 pounds of heroin, and two pounds of fentanyl. CBP has warned in the past that drug trafficking from the U.S.-Mexico border region results in the loss of American lives.

News of the tunnel came on the same day that CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan held a press conference in which he warned about the scourge of smuggling.

"As the U.S. continues to take on the challenges posed by COVID-19, we must secure our borders from illegal aliens who show their complete disregard of even the most basic application of health and safety precautions, which have become our new norm against COVID-19," said Morgan, showing pictures of container trucks packed with migrants

He added that criminal organizations and smugglers provide false promises to migrants and "have no concern for their safety or the safety of American citizens -- again in this backdrop of COVID-19." He explained that the migrants are kept in crowded, unsanitary stash houses for days in the sweltering heat, a situation he described as a "perfect incubator" for the new coronavirus.

The Associated Press and Fox News' Morgan Phillips ontributed to this report.

Well, the wall has made it more difficult, so their tunneling will increase. Ground sensors will no doubt increase in use.

When they discover such a tunnel, they ought to pick a favorable time, and touch off a couple hundred pounds of C-5 in there.  Concussion works wonders..and would deter others from using such a tunnel.

Sounds cruel, but how many lives are they destroying here in the US?  Time we quit being patsys for the cartels.
...Could just flood the tunnel with some gasoline, that would warn them to leave..then touch the thing off !

Unlike Guadalajara, this could be confined to the immediate tunnel !  Sometimes a fatal disease must be fought with strong medicine !

I have no problem with that or spending money on anything that will actually stop it but truth be told burn that tunnel and they build another. We ran into that with drugs when I was on the drug interdiction team the coast guard first started. They said we stopped millions of dollars worth of drugs that first year from getting into the country and a fact check showed that there was more drugs in the US that year then any other year ever. They just find another way. Only way to really stop it is to clamp down on people giving them jobs and our own government from giving them freebees. There not going to come here if they cant eat here. Why spend money blowing up tunnels and building walls that barely slow it down when we could actually SAVE money by starving them.

If we were to do that with every one we find..they would soon stop using tunnels...the price (being blown to bits) would be too high !  We would have to be consistent though !

So, now off to church..be back later..

problem is they can find every tunnel. If they could they wouldn't have to blow them up. Just put a couple border patrol agent on one end and the Mexican police on the other.Heck even if they plug all the tunnels and build a wall all the way across the south half the south border is on the gulf of mexico not a land border with mexico. Why is not giving them freebees and rewards for making it not what sense for our government??

Well, I'm assuming you mean C4 explosives, but natural gas and a detonator would probably be effective.
Either way, it along with the wall are a step in the right direction.

Now that's an idea for the ages. Mexico pays for our waste disposal by digging "underground waste disposal reservoirs".

I would also use them to quell riots. Back 'em up, hook up the hose, turn the pump on, rev the engine, and watch the rioters run away.

Uuuuhhhhh, then there is a raw sewage mess that actual property owners don't deserve. I wouldn't be for that.

Fire hoses on the other hand will wash rioters down the street whether they want to go or not.

Yes... C4, not C5..my bad..  Actually propane would work better than natural gas.  Natural gas is lighter than air, while propane being heavier than air, settles into lower areas..... just waiting to be touched off!
But then, Bill's suggestion may have some methane gas component !  LOL

I like the methane "solution", all that hard work digging that tunnel, should shouldn't go to "waste", errrr, I mean unused.

Waste should go to the tunnel, then two issues solved at once.

Secretly fill it with H2s while they are still in there, use their own ventilation system. They will never know what hit them or see it coming.
A tunnel full of corpses.
