Nice weekend
« on: September 12, 2020, 12:51:37 PM »
It's been raining most of the day so we drove to the UP for pastys and a change of scenery. The shop we usually stop at was closed for a death in the family but a fellow at the gun shop slash dentist told us about another spot. Back at camp with a full belly and a fire. Came to hunt but that will wait till next time.

It's a meat and potato onion ect. filled pastry. Hot and hardy. It's a Michigan thing I think. We have them in Wisconsin (northern) but somehow they aren't as good.

Actually they are a British dish.  If I recall correctly they originated around Wales.

Never saw them, but they sound like a hearty, get-up-and-go start to the day.  I have seen a similar thing at Scottish festivals, where I have demonstrated blacksmithing.

When the Scots have them, they call them "bridies"..but don't ask me where the name came from.  They seem to be primarily meat filled.

There was a lot of Cornish miners in the ironwood area. Their wives would send a in their lunch box. Sometimes meat on one end and fruit on the other.

I find that very interesting, immigrant folks retaining recipes and customs they brought with them. In those old days, bringing lunch in a sealed crust, rather than open sandwiches, may have been one way to reduce dust contamination in the food.

"rather than open sandwiches"

The sandwich, another British invention; but much later then the pasty which was developed much earlier - probably in the middle ages.

I would guess it depends on who is telling the story. My stepfather talked about Italians going into the hills with flat bread and putting leftover meat, of course olive oil and whatever vegetables were at hand along with spices and cheeses being the first pizza. If they had extra bread and put a piece on top. Whallah. Der first sangwidch...

Speaking from memory (read, not lived ;D)  The sandwich is credited to one Lord Sandwich, who liked to play cards so much, that when he wass in a card game, he didn't want to stop long enough when dinner time came, so he had those serving food, to just slap some roast beef between 2 slices of bread, and bring it to his table.

I understand Lord Sandwich to be somewhat of an apologist for American independence cause.  The Hawaiian Islands were named for him..originally called the Sandwich Islands.  That was after Capt Cook was killed there.
