By David Aaro | Fox News

A Michigan deer hunter, 14, died on Saturday after he apparently fell asleep in a cornfield and was run over by a corn harvester, according to reports.

Emergency responders were called to a field in Chandler Township -- located about 240 miles northwest of Detroit -- just before 9 a.m. A farm worker found the teenager after driving over him, a news release by the Huron County Sheriff's Office said.

Authorities said the 14-year-old, of Elkton, had been dropped off in the field so he could hunt deer. The machine operator, a 25-year-old from Pigeon, was harvesting the field with a large Krone corn chopper, according to the Huron Daily Tribune.

"Unaware anyone was in it [the field], the hunter was accidentally driven over and found by the chopper operator a very short while later," the paper reported.

Investigators said they believed the boy may have fallen asleep upon arriving at the field. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Huron County Medical Examiner's Office has ordered an autopsy.

The teenager's identity wasn’t immediately released.

That is awful and that sized machine would make it a grizzly scene.

On a side note, typical journalism these days, they put up picture of a combine instead of a chopper.

I was wondering why they were calling a combine a chopper.

Isn't a chopper a machine that cuts and mulches stalk and all, and shoots the whole mess into a trailer?

One of the sons where we do crop damage shooting at the farm lost a leg. He was running a potatoe picker and had it on auto pilot and got out to clear a rock and got caught in it and it took his leg off.  He was 27 at the time. Luckily his dad had just pulled up to the field to talk to him. 2 weeks later while he was still in the hospital his wife who was an emergency room rn was doing voluteer work on the local ambulance crew got t boned by a semi and killed instantly. Left scott with 2 young kids. Scott is a tough sob. If you didnt know his leg was fake youd never notice. I didnt know for the first year i knew him. I used to think as a lineman i had a dangerous job but more farmers and loggers are hurt and killed then lineman by far and even more then police officers.

I beleive what is refered to as a chopper is used for hay alphalfa ect and just cuts it off and leaves it lay and the bailer picks it up and bails it. A combine is for grains like oats. It chops then separates the stalks from the actual grains and dumps the stalks back on the ground and the grain in a truck. Dont quote me on it though because im sure not a farmer.

Having been gone from the farm life for many years I went googling. Combines are still combines. The rigs used to cut silage are called  forage harvesters by their manufactuers. The two look much alike. The term "chopper" might be a regional name. Back in my farm days combines were called "thrashers" as much as they were "combines".  Neither of the modern rigs is something you are going to survive being run over with. I'm guessing the pieces left would be smaller with the combine than with the forage harvester or "chopper".

Dee was correct, that is a combine! Originally there was the "reaper" which cut and bundled the grain on the stalk. I spent many hours behind the reaper, standing the grain bundles up, and placing them in tent shaped "shocks", so they would dry thoroughly, and shed water if necessary.
Then the bundles were hauled to the barn, and were sent through the "thresher", where the grain was separated from the straw, with the grain usually being blown into a bin.
As time went on and brains went to work, somebody..perhaps Gleaner Co. figured, "let us build a machine which combines both the reaper and the thresher".  Shazam!  Here comes the COMBINE !

The "field chopper" as it is called around here, is a different machine.  It is used to harvest hay or  corn crops.  While the combine separates grain from the stalk..the chopper chops the crop with very sharp blades, in simple terms, a more 'violent' action.

Although both the combine and chopper today are generally multi row and appear much alike, the chopper's throw is much faster, so the most notable difference for the tyro, is the shape of the discharge chute.  Since the chopper is discharging much faster and with much more force.. the chopper has a more gently curved discharge chute.
Note the one in the posted picture, the combine chute turns at a right angle to drop the grain.
Below, see a simple, single row chopper, set up with a corn head.  I use a simple model for easier explanation...note how gently the chute is curved...much more speed and force.  Actually the grain from a combine falls from the chute into the truck or wagon.

In my part of the world Ironglow's "reaper" was known as a "binder" or sometimes a "row binder". Like Ironglow we also stood the bundles up in "shocks" that looked like a teepee and let them dry for a time and then hauled them in and stacked them in stacks that kind of resembled loaves of bread. There was a method to this where  rain and snow melt would drain to the outside away from the grain and the bottom was wider than the top. As a kid I loved to climb up a stack and slide down the side. It was much more enjoyable than building the stack.  My mother didn't think it was that great as it increased wear and tear on the seat of my pants. Some bundles were simply fed to the cows in big feed troughs. Some of it went thru a hammer mill, stalks and all, for cow feed to be mixed with cotton seed meal for beef cows and milk cows. This was a labor intensive deal from "shocking" it to feeding it to the cows. I don't miss farm life at all. I have had asthma and allergies all my life and as a kid a lot of times I wondered if I would be able to draw another breath but always managed to get it done. I lost count of the all nights I spent sitting up in a chair because I couldn't breathe laying down.

Several of the tractor manufactuers also built combines that you pulled behind a tractor. Gleaner which as far as I know never manufactured tractors had the reputation of building the best combines and the first self propelled combine I ever saw was a Gleaner. We had an Allis-Chalmers pull behind.

Yes; it was called a binder as well here too!  Setting the shocks was rough work, but at least it was outdoors.  Working indoors, directing the thresher chute during summer heat was worse, because there was much dust and dirt involved. With  the profuse sweat and dirt..one came out, looking like he had rolled in coal.
Mowing away loose hay up in the loft, was much the same..only heavier work.

My father-in-law had a trucking business, in which he used International Harvester trucks.  Since Cyrus McCormick invented the reaper..( first McCormick Deering..then International Harvester) His brand of trucks were jokingly referred to as "Corn binders".

When I became large enough I fed the bundles to the hammer mill with my face wrapped in a wet dish towel tied around my head like a Hollywood train robber to help keep me from breathing so much dust I couldn't function. My dad worked inside the barn scooping feed away from the feed spout to fill the bins and he would come out into the fresh air to cool off and would be a gray blob. He never wore any breathing protection at all and it never seemed to bother him and he never developed any lung problems as long as he lived. The mill had a big dust collector contraption on it and it did vent a lot of dust but it was still  bad inside the barn. I wouldn't have lasted five minutes in there. Back in those days commercial hearing or breathing protection wasn't to be found. The wet dish towel was my mother's invention.

I followed your link and the lower picture looked much like the way we shocked bundles. "Stook" for "shock" is new to me.

Right O&S  the term "stook' is new to me also.

From Lloyd.. "I beleive what is refered to as a chopper is used for hay alphalfa ect and just cuts it off and leaves it lay and the bailer picks it up and bails it."

Normally, it used to be a mowing machine..then a rake, either a "dump' rake or a "side delivery" rake.. Then left to cure and the baler picked it up and baled it !
A great thing developed in the 1960s, was the hay conditioner..cuts & crushes the hay, leaving it in windrows, dries quicker "hay in a day"..  Then comes the baler .  New Holland called theirs a "Haybine".
In th e60s and part of the 70s, I was parts manager in a Farm equipment company.

Nowadays, I have to look close or at the label, to see what some of the newest machines really are,, ;) ;D

Muy Amish neighbors bring me back daily however.  https://www.dirtywheel.com/farm/1970/the-amish-way-of-making-hay

I can recall making hay just that way.. yes, including horses..with our Belgians, Tom
& Daisy !  In the video, the Anish are using an old,old stationary baler.  We put the hay up loose. Although I did work with balers, they were all regular, mobile balers with pickup heads.  I only recall one time, seeing an old stationary baler in operation, when I was just a little kid.

My dad got into alfalfa hay after I got married and had little kids. I helped him haul and put bales in the barn. I threw them into the barn and he stacked them. I had commercial breathing protection by this time but I would would have to take a break now and then to take it off and catch my breath. I hated handling alfalfa hay. Back breaking work and you itched like crazy and I'm especially allergic to it's dust. Back before air conditioning became common in vehicles I could meet a truck hauling alfalfa and start sneezing just from the whiff I got in passing. I quickly learned to hold my breath when doing this. There is little hay production around here now and I have AC so no more problems. I still hold my my breath when driving by a cotton gin on the downwind side during ginning season though. I also stay out of the detergent isle in stores because the smell causes me to start wheezing immediately.

I guess the most curious thing in this whole thread is how that 14 year old slept sound enough to get ran over by a piece of heavy farm equipment.

Makes one wonder if it is possible that somehow he was dead before he was run over..

What caught my attention was , how did he run over him? The corn head on the chopper is in front of any tires and the head cuts at about 4 inches. I just don't see the victim not getting caught in the corn head and pulled in.

Judging by the corn stubble they look to be cutting higher then around here. Rocks are bad on choppers and MI has their share of those. I guess it's possible to have missed the corn head if he was laying down in the rows. Poor kid.
