Yesterday was my birthday and my computer gave up the ghost. My computer geek son worked his magic to get it going and his magic failed. He hauled it home to see if he could retrieve anything off the hard drive and start looking for a deal on a new or refurb machine. The thing was old so I’m not surprised it quit. It was on it’s second hard drive. I have a good 23” monitor and a good sound system. Now I just need something to make them work again.

I’m using an ipad right now. I would almost as soon go to a dentist as mess with this gadget. I kick myself every once in a while for buying the frustrating thing.

Congrats, and happy birthday. You shouldn't have much trouble selling your iPad to a refurb shop. My big sister
is friends with a lady who has a company in NYC that buys iPads. Reconditions them and sells them online with a one year warranty.

There is nothing wrong with the pad. It’s just old low tech, fumble fingered me. I would give it to a grandkid before selling it for just a few bucks to a refurbisher.

Yeah, you may no longer be able to get any updates for them. That lady in NY cleans them up but that's about it. Then she donates the old ones to schools, or she did when NY still had functioning schools. She usually paid
pretty good money for the newer ones from  insurance company's who turned them in.

Being a good friend of the family she just gave me this one that I'm on now.its a seven, so far so good there.
After 15 years of Apple, I don't think I could do windows anymore. Not that I would want to support Bill Gates.
Oh, don't get me wrong, Apple is no saint.

I used to always build my own computers when I needed to replace the one I was using but in recent years I've been getting refurbished Dell computers for killer deal from Newegg.com.  Dell's are pretty well made and use mostly standard  parts so they can be repaired or upgraded without too much trouble.

These computers were leased for a few years to some large corporation then sent back to Dell when they leased the next batch.  I got my last referb about a year and a half ago.  It's a 3.2 gHz quad core and came with 4 gigs of memory.  I got it for about 60 bucks more than the cost of a new copy of Win10 Pro that came on it.  I put another couple hundred into in in the way of a heavy duty power supply, more memory, a new graphics card and a solid state hard drive.  I figure I'm in it way less than half of what I would be to build a new one.  If I were playing high end games it wouldn't cut it but for my business and a few games in the off hours, it's great.

Later on I bought another one just like it to replace the one I had connected to my TV.  I used the old memory chips from my business computer to upgrade it to 8gigs (I'm running 16 in my business computer.)  We stream video with this one mostly but the old lady does Facebook on it and plays a few games.  My work shop computer is still a scrounged together machine with the free Win10 upgrade.  I'll keep it as long as it continues to work...

Well, my homegrown computer geek saved this one. Windows was corrupted. He installed open Windows 10 and reinstalled the programs that I use. I'm in the process of installing bookmarks to my frequented sites now. This computer is getting up in age as it came with Windows just before they released Windows 10. My computer back then was having problems and we had it limping along trying to make it to the new Windows release but it didn't make it. This was a pretty fast machine in it's day and we, he really, installed some more memory. All I did was watch and hold a flashlight while he put it back in the cabinet where it resides. It seems to be just as good now as it was when the additional memory was installed.

I may buy a gun now that the computer is working again for a birthday present to myself. That is if I can find something interesting in the current firearms/ammo situation. It's not a big priority but more of an "if I run across something" thing.

Out side of three lap tops, my only desk top computer still has Windows 98.

It does not have world wide web capablility any more as I lost that when I zapped a virus from it a long time ago, but there are pictures on it, from the web, I like to keep, just because I can but the main reason it is , as it is , is because I use the Word Processing feature it came with when ever I want to write some thing .

You do not one as good as that one , free , with the new systems.
It also is attached to a 17 inch cathode ray tube TV screen that I paid, big bucks for a long time ago and still works just fine.
I lost my Windows 98 disc, and the one a girl gave me is a pirate and does not load a full system, but if I ever find a good 98 disc. I will put it on a lap-top just for the word processing feature.

I had a dedicated Sharp Word Processing machine but the drive disc went bad and new one did/do not exist.
That still pisses me off.

im the same. I cant stand trying to go on the internet of a i pad or phone. Cant stand even a lap top unless it has a mouse pluged into it and the keyboard slanted. Probably going to come a day when our desk tops go the way of the dinosaurs. But until then ill have one and sit at my desk and do my internet thing and when i walk away leave the internet right there. I dont facebook, i never even sent a tex. If you want me and im not home dont bother calling my cell phone because 99 percent of the time its sitting on the table turned off. If you want to talk to me do something novel today. Hop in your car and stop by to talk or call me on a TELEPHONE. If i dont answer leave a message and i MIGHT get back to you. Hash tag that ;D Glad you got it up and running. My desktop was running real slow and many sites wouldnt work because i had an old operating system. My son in law did a restore boot and downloaded windows 10 in it and its 10 times faster but all my email and alot of other sites work different now and i HATE different. Wife said we need a new computer. I laughed and told her to stick to her phone and ill worry about the computer.

I have already made my thoughts about ipads known. On the other hand my wife loves her's. Mine should still be in good shape as little as I use it and when she wears her's out and she can have mine. I'm also not a fan of laptops unless I can set it on a desk and plug in a mouse. I really don't care for their little scroll thingy. It's handy to grow your own computer geek or, in your case, have one marry into the family. I really don't do much on a computer except browse the net and download and tweek the photos I take. I did install imgur so I can upload a photo but seldom do. I just don't have a need to be constantly in contact with people except for my darling wife. I've never sent a text and seldom get a text as I have made my feelings know about if you want to tell or ask me something call me. I hardly ever get a call either as the family are the only one's with my phone number and they know that I seldom have my phone anywhere close enough to hear. The most I interact with people other than my family is on this forum. I have out lived all my friends.

My friends are mostly dead too Old. So I’m growing a new friend, my grandson. We spent duck season opening in the marsh behind the house. He’s 12 soon to be 13. He found out that wood ducks are much quicker than he is. He had about 10 shots but didn’t fire one because the ducks were gone before he could get his gun up. But I think he’ll learn. He does great on turkey and deer.

My current shooting buddies are my 12 and 9 year old great grand daughters that are sisters. The oldest is a go-getter and will shoot anything I will let her shoot. The younger one is a small child and can't handle anything very big. The oldest has outgrown the little crickett 22 I bought for them but it still fits the younger one. E-school is taking up most of their time now but we can still get out on weekends. There is absolutely nothing for them to hunt. We are in extreme drouth having received less than 6" of rain this year but the quail are doing well. The problem with quail hunting is our quail are the scaled variety commonly called blue quail and they are runners. Grandpa can't run them down any longer and one person chasing them is just wasting their time. They run, scatter, and disappear in the grass and bushes. Dove were in very short supply. No water holes and no sunflowers grew so nothing to keep them in this area.
