A hunter was attacked and killed by a grizzly bear in an Alaska state park – a first in the nature preserve, officials announced.

The victim was in Alaska’s Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve during a 10-day moose hunting trip on Sunday when the bear attacked, the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) announced Tuesday.

The hunter, whose name, age and gender were not immediately released, was in the area of the Chisana River drainage with a friend at the time.

The NPS called it “the first known bear mauling fatality recorded in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve since the park was established in 1980.”

Officials urged hunters and park-goers to beware of bears and take necessary precautions.

Reminds me of a story I heard years ago.........

Seems there was a couple who were touring Spain.  They were interested in tracing the places involved in the Spanish civil war.
They overnighted in a quaint, old Spanish hill town, complete with art museum, sports plaza, and waving fields of sunflowers.  After sightseeing all day, they stopped at a local bistro for a repast.  Being adventuresome, they asked the waiter for the best in the house.
Soon the waiter brought out a complete meal..nice salad and peasant bread.  For the meat portion, there were two  generously sized football shaped items..not identified, but delicious.

They took a fancy to the town and decided to stay a few extra days.

About a week later they visited the same bistro, the waiter recognized them, when they asked him to serve the same meal as they had previously.

When the meal arrived, they enjoyed it just as much before, with one exception.

As he paid the bill, the husband inquired, .."the meal was fine and the meat was just as good as before, but it was in much smaller portions, how is that?

The waiter just shrugged his shoulders and replied..."sometimes the bull wins!"

So, in this case too.....sometimes the bear wins..

"They have the guns and therefore we are for peace and for reformation through the ballot. When we have the guns, then it will be through the bullet"      (Saul Alinsky) ...hero of the left..

Huntin with a switch in bear country. If he was carrying a backup pistol it wasn't enough.

My oldest daughter and I spent 2 days in that area when she moved to Alaska as a first year school teacher in Anchorage. Beautiful country. We really didn’t plan that side trip, but was just driving looking over the countryside. Night overtook us so we slept in the car and ate wild berries and drank glacier water for our supper. Made it back to Anchorage late the next day.

We saw lots of animals but no brown bears. Although we kept a eye out for them. My only weapon on that trip was my pocket knife. But it was all I needed.
