Fords bronco is making jeep scramble which is a good thing. They allready came out with the 4cyl turbo (yawn) and the diesel. Now they announced two more are coming for 2021. A hybrid with the 4 cyl turbo that when running both the electric and gas at the same time produces 400 ft lbs of torque. It has a 25 mile all electric range (yawn) The real news is the 70th aniversary is going to be celebrated with a jeep rubicon 6.4 hemi. 450hp, electric lockers on all 4 wheels that can be activated by switch independently and from the factory with a 2 inch lift and 35 inch tires. 0-60 in under 6 seconds and that would smoke about any muscle car from the 60s and 70s. they were talking in the 60-70k range. Yup its expensive but to do a hemi swap even with a 5.7 today your looking at at least 20k and this one comes ready to rock with dana 44s on both ends and the same automatic there putting in hellcats. Chrysler is in the stomping mood not the sparing mood lately. Its trx truck absolutely obliterates a raptor and with ford hinting the 450 hp v6 might find its way into the bronco jeep jumped first and like ever red blooded american would want did it with a good old v8. Got my wife shaking her head. A week ago i was telling her in 4 years when the house is paid off im getting a ram trx. But that would give me 4 vehicles because i wouldnt drive it in the winter and still would need a truck, would never go without a jeep and love my challenger. But yesterday i told her plans might have changed. This way i could sell or trade my wrangler and just replace it with one of those. Thank you God for not making me one of those little old men who drive there tiny car 50mph in a 70 zone. I hope im still laying rubber down on the road in my 80s!

I'm one of those old men who drive 55 even in 70 zones. I don't drive a car tho, only a full size truck with a V8 engine. I long ago outgrew my "Willy the race car driver" days. That's what they called me in high school.

I'm in no rush to get anywhere these days and am smart enough to know my reflexes are far, far from what they once was and accept that it just ain't safe for me to  go running around as fast as my truck will go.

Those days are long behind me. No, I really don't miss them.

I drive like an old codger also, even in the wife's Miata. A Miata is a pretty fast car, but they are more nimble
than being any thing else. And it has a five speed standard transmission, which makes it fun to drive.

bill it may be an excess but that said ive never owned a vehicle that i thought was to powerful (they do have a peddle that controls that) and i have drove them that needed more. My wrangler is a good example. Its fine putting around town or in the woods but get it on the highway and get behind a couple semis on a two lane (all we have around here) or get behinds some grandpa driving a motor home that he can barely see over the wheel and pass them and id take my hemi ram or challenger ANY day over the jeep. To be honest i dont need 450 hp. But it sure wouldnt hurt anything even in the woods. Low speed torque keeps a guy from getting stuck. What i really would have cheered for is a cheaper version on the standard (non rubicon) with a 5.7 hemi at about 350 hp. that would have done fine at addressing the lack of power and especially the lack of low end torque the 6 has. It would probably get better fuel economy then the 3.7 to boot. Best mine will do with 411s and 34 inch tires is about 16. My 6.4 challenger that weights about the same gets better then 25 because its about always loafing just above idle and just a tiny throttle push will allow you to pass about anything. Bottom line is the ONLY advantage less hp has is cost of purchase these days. You say you drive a fullsized truck with a v8. Why is that differnt then a wrangler with a v8. I believe that toyota v8 puts out north of 350 hp. A stout motor itself.

betcha your miata would eat my wrangler for lunch in a drag race or in passing power. Probably has a much better power to weight ratio. Bottom line is they all come with a throttle not an on off switch. My challenger is dammed fast if you get on it but will cruise down the road at 65 turning 1700 rpm and get 26mpg doing it. Thats fuel economy that most 4 cyls would have bragged about 10 years ago. Matter of fact the new vettes are getting 30mpg on the road and will eat my challenger for lunch and thats probably all your going to get in your miata in the real world. Bottom line is the stock wranglers are lame in the motor dept. Even the new hybrid one will smoke the 3.7s in a drag race and low end torque and the diesels put out near twice the torque at low speed. Id bet part of the charm of your miata when you drive it is FUN.  I've drove them and there a hoot. About like a big go cart. It puts a smile on your face. Why would that be a bad thing. Well there has to be some that agree with me because the first run of the trx sold out in 2 hours. My guess is the crappy thing about this 6.4 is there will be so many that want them and they too will sell out before there even done producing them. Good thing for the gave up on fun bunch is there will be a pile of used wranglers on the lots that are traded in. As it is wranglers hold there value better then about any other vehicle made. Maybe it will drive the price down a bit on the used ones.

I KNOW the miata would eat my '07 wrangle's lunch in a drag race. I couldn't care less and my old wrangler will go places without any problem that you might but probably not be able to drag the miata into. The two are designed for two entirely different means of travel. I bought my jeep to be able to get around easily in the boonies, not for a hot rod red light to red light dragster. That kind of thing will get you expensive traffic citations and large insurance rate increases. I AM against people that pass me in a 35 mph zone in town doing about 60 like a superduty ford weaving thru traffic did yesterday afternoon.

I'm not putting down anyone that desires horse power, whether it be in a jeep, a miata, or any other vehicle. I'm just pointing out that they are very different vehicles made for very different uses. I used to be all for fast cars and trucks but not so much anymore. I'm more into comfort and good gas mileage in my dotage.

Not saying anything negative about your desire for more HP. Just that I recognize my reflexes are grossly slowed and that I am not safe on the road at high speed. Plus I just am not in a hurry anymore.

On those occasions when I feel I need a shot of power the Toyota V8 delivers it. It is rated at 381 HP. When ya put your foot down it moves out appropriately. I just find few reasons to put my foot down these days.

I do from time to time find myself having pulled out onto the road and realize there is a vehicle coming upon me I really didn't see. Not often but as I age more often than in days long ago. Having the HP to get me up to the speed they are going really fast is really nice. But once I reach that speed I back off.

I honestly have no desire to go faster than 55 mph on the highway. Now if going on a really long trip, faster is better to shorten the time the long trip makes. But these days a long trip for me is going 25 or so miles to Anniston rather than 8 miles to Jacksonville which is my usual trip to town. Even more often I only go about 3 miles up the road to the small grocery store.

Don't get me wrong, I am NOT an advocate for weak engines in anything. I like the HP on tap if needed. I just don't find myself needing it very often. My average, most common trips these days are less than 7 miles round trip or less than 17 round trip if I go into town. The longer 50 mile round trip to the larger nearby town is one I take only 3 or 4 times a year these days.

Since I drive so little what gas mileage I get just is of not interest at all to me. I just don't go far enough for mileage to matter. Most folks on here prolly use more fuel a month than I do a year.

When we took the Miata out to the Blue Ridge Parkway it took those curves exceptionally well. And it had more than enough power in a situation like that. Plus being a standard it was a blast to drive. But that's basically what it was designed for. It's only a 2.0 L 4-cylinder but with duel overhead cams it can really scoot.

Some of them had a six speed but this one came with a five, so the torque range is a bit different.

I still have an old AMC CJ 7 with the 304 V8. It always had plenty of power. No AC though and it's a rag top, going on its third top now. It still runs ok for as old as it is.

  I get alot of one finger salutes and tailgators  running up behind me flashing their headlights , I just blow them a kiss and keep chugging along at 55 . it  does  get a little unnerving when those big semi s  get on your bumper  tho.

I almost had one rear end me when I slowed down to make a legal right turn. Blowing his horn and tires squealing. Oil field water hauler fresh up from Mexico what else could I say.

I pulled the jeep to Colorado a couple of times and used it to sight see. I kept up fine in those mountains even with it's rather anemic V-6 plus it easily traversed Tin Cup Pass and some other steep, rough mountain roads. I took it up one almost to the top of a 13,000' mountain. I stopped about 100 feet below the peak as my wife said " I'm NOT going up that road with you. STOP right here and let me out". I didn't tell her that I had chickened out on that almost straight up section and intended to park right where she said to stop.

NOT having to shift gears is part of what I consider a comfortable vehicle. Besides an auto tranny is more trouble free and efficient than a stick now. I see no need to make my knee ache pushing a clutch either. If pushing a clutch floats your boat please have at it. I have certainly pushed my share and that's another reason why I no longer get a kick out of doing so. Our SUV has the option of manually shifting gears but I've never used it even if no clutch is involved. I even had an automatic in my last welding rig.

Did you signal, the legal amount required in Minn. at least before you turned. :-*
It seems most people have zero idea you signal tens of yards BEFORE you turn, not when you are half way through the turn.
At that , on the road I drive most often, two lane, there are a fair number of people who while making a left turn, with no traffic coming, will pull over into the other lane so as to not hold up traffic.

I did not drive 55 when I was young, when the speed limit was 55 or now.
Life it too short to spend any more hours on the road than need be; I spent too many days on vacation driving into the night as I had X amount of time to do Y number of things on vacation.
My father and Dad's father did not waste time on the road, so neither do I .


Many, many years ago , I did several times when some dude thought a long line of cars behind him ,  was their problem, not his, finally get by and then put on the brakes as I cut back.
The last time I did it some dude nearly crashed his econo-van so I never did it again but I do not regret having done it.
It was actually seeing another driver to it to some one who nearly drove into a tree that truly convinced me time to let it go.

The rare occasions I am driving and truly sight seeing, if I see a line of cars starting behind me I will pull over to the shoulder and let them by.

I do think the very high horse power utes and trucks are kinda odd but after what the government did to the auto industry in the seventies it is good young dudes can enjoy it while it lasts.
At least the West Coast fwd crap-wagon tuner crap with stereos that are judged by volume , not sound quality, never became Detroits thing to copy; although with the Pontiac Aztek GM tried. :o

Of course I signaled at least 200 yards away with him on my azz.And even edged over to let him pass. Bob,I didn't start driving yesterday. No accidents even in my service trucks. One that wasn't my fault, a drunk ran a redlight and hit my service truck in the rear . A still active CDL, no DUI's cheap insurance rates . After all those thousands of miles Ive driven, that's pretty good.

well said bob its the ones that thumb there nose and drive 50 that cause the wrecks not the ones going 65. Its all rural around here and most speed limits are 55. When i go down state or to WI and drive 70-75 on the freeway and then come on to rural 55 mph roads id feel like i could get out and walk. 55 mile an hour speed limits are stupid. they were done for the cars of the day back in the 70s and 80s that got terrible gas mileage to reduce fuel usage. today my challenger goes down the road a 2000 rpm at 90mph. My old 77 chev pickup was doing 3000 at 60. It got 12 mpg at 55 and the new ram gets 21 at the same speed. The new ram has much safer brakes and handles as well as a camaro did in the 70s. Speed limit everywhere should go back to 65. People dont understand that like bob others have better things to do like work and trucks that transport your goods have to drive slower which costs you money. If your to old and decerped to even maintain 55 on the highway or to ignorant to not even pull over and let people by if you insist on driving that slow you should have your license pulled. We get it all the time up here. A 2 mile long line of cars going 50 on a 2 lane highway because some old grandpa can barely see over the steering wheel or some idot camper comes up from the south and acts like he never saw a lake before. Camping season is the WORSE! The cops would make it much safer if they enforced a minimun speed limit of 55 then a max. People that drove prius's and bmws all there lives and retire and buy some GIANT motorhome and hook a car to the back of it and with no training take off down the road and are afraid to drive it over 50mph! Either there to busy trying to keep control of it or are just rude city people that dont care but will let a line of 50 cars pile up behind them with people that HAVE to get somewhere and dont have time to piddle around trying to pass at every opportunity. Idiots that even slow to 45 when they come across a stretch in the road where you can see lake superior! My wife gets mad at me. Ill drop the challenger down to 3rd gear and come roaring around them and cut in front of them like a nascar race with a certain finger in the air. it isnt just here either. How many of you that live near citys drive the freeway with some idiot driving 55 in the fast lane because they have to turn 5 miles up the road or just because theres less cars in it. You want to putting around in your pickup GO IN THE WOODS. If you are so old you cant drive the speed limit then turn in your license. My day is 87. He has to take a test now every year to keep his license. took him up last month to get it. The guy testing him said he did fine but might want to consider slowing down. I asked if he had done something wrong while going to fast and the tester said no he drove perfectly fine. Dad looked at him and said how fast do you drive that stretch? The guy just smiled. Drive 50 down the highway and your going to get passed by a 87 year old that will probably have the same finger in the air. If your all alone on the highway and want to drive 50 in a 65 zone have at it. But when your holding up the majority, getting fist shook at you and getting flipped the bird every day youd think it would tell you something like your being rude to others.

had some idiot a couple weeks ago in front of me doing 40 for about a couple miles. Curvy road and i couldnt find a spot to pass. When i did i floored the jeep and started going around him and he decided (with no signal to hit his brakes and turn into the road coming right across the front of my jeep. I slammed on the brakes and didnt miss him by more then a couple inches. Im sure he was looking for the road and saw it at the last minute. Never looked in his mirror and didnt use his turn signal till he saw what was happening and got on the side road and turned it on. Im sure if i would have hit him he would have claimed i signaled and it would have been my fault. I probably would have went to jail anyway because i was FUMING! Another old man that should be taken off the road. Guy had been driving that slow for a few miles and had probably 10 more cars behind me and didnt have the courtesy to let anyone go buy. I even honked at him a couple times. Like to say it was some yuppy with out of state plates but he had a rusty ford truck and MI plates. Probably forgot where he lived or just came from the old folks gathering at the local watering hole.

and bill when i heading to town 5 miles to get groceries i dont drive 90 either. But an underpowered vehicle is less safe then one with an over abundance of power just like you said. Good example was the 2000 tj i had. It was a 4cly stick and if you wanted to pass a semi doing 45 youd best have a 3 mile straight away because top end was 70mph with a tail wind and getting there about needed you to take vacation from work. Most dangerous vehicle i ever owned. When or if my reactions get so slow i cant maintain the posted speed limit ill just probably start taking the dirt roads and trails to town or let my wife drive. Hopefully ill have a heart attack before my challenger has to be driven 50!! It would probably eject me out of the seat after a hour of that nonsense ;) i guess like ive said a number of times. We are all different. Cars, trucks, jeeps, atvs, snowmobiles, heck anything with a motor has been along with guns my lifes passion. Probably 75 percent of people dont have ANYTHING there passionate about and lead some brown paper bag boring life. I thank GOD he gave me my need for speed and the need to burn powder. My life wouldnt be worth living without them.  I guess i could spend my money taking up ball room dancing or going on some yuppy cruise ship or buy a set of those golf ball whacking thing a ma jigs. Truthfully id rather burn the powder it takes to put a 44 slug right through my skull then do that.

I usually set my cruise control 1 mph "above" the speed limit, and sometimes 5 mph "above" so I'm seldom poking along.
I do however get the occasional tailgater.
My solution to tailgaters is, I turn on my emergency flashers and gradually start slowing down.
Learned that trick from an old biker, and it works. It draws attention to the tailgater, and they will usually get the hint, and back off.
When they back off, I speed back up to a little above the speed limit.

if your driving the posted speed limit then what complaint could i have. If i want to go faster i need to wait till a safe opportunity comes to pass you. Its the guys driving 5 and even 10 under the speed limit i have problems with. it isnt like up here you have any 4 lane highways that you can just go around them. What we have here especially in the summer is a full on invasion by people dragging campers they cant handle and old people wanting to look at all the pretty trees. Two lane roads with more curves then straight stetches. Add road construction in to the mess and my wife works 5 miles away and its taken here a half hour to get home this summer. If you think the corona virus kept anyone home this summer ive got a bridge to sell you. Its called the machinac bridge and if you buy it PLEASE blow it up! While your at it please as the president to build a wall on the Wisconsin border. Id be we get more non americans here in the summer then texas. At least this summer anyway. Hard to tell though whether they came by plane or drove up from Dearborn!! By the looks of plate counts I think a new term needs to be invented. Sun birds!!! Saw more plates from states like texas and florida and arizona this year then probably every year ive lived up here combined. Tell your friends. We have the virus here now too. This is NOT the only place in the country thats safe. The way some of them drive they must have left last summer to make it here before the snow flys this year! I think id rather take up golf then drive from arizona in a motor home 45 mph all the way to northern michigan. 
I'm one of those old men who drive 55 even in 70 zones. I don't drive a car tho, only a full size truck with a V8 engine. I long ago outgrew my "Willy the race car driver" days. That's what they called me in high school.

I'm in no rush to get anywhere these days and am smart enough to know my reflexes are far, far from what they once was and accept that it just ain't safe for me to  go running around as fast as my truck will go.

Those days are long behind me. No, I really don't miss them.
  I get alot of one finger salutes and tailgators  running up behind me flashing their headlights , I just blow them a kiss and keep chugging along at 55 . it  does  get a little unnerving when those big semi s  get on your bumper  tho.

I haven't said anything about driving 50. I did mention 55 which is the speed limit on two lane roads in my part of the world. I set my cruise control to the speed limit on any road I'm on if doing so doesn't cause me to get too close to the vehicle in front of me. Most places it doesn't cuz 90% of the folks want to go 10-15 mph above the speed limit.

I live on a road that is less than 10 miles long end to end. I'm at the 3 mile marker on the west end of that road and the small college town of Jacksonville is on the eastern end of it.

It is a rural and winding road with maybe 3 or 4 spots along the entire road that you can safely pass someone else assuming no one is coming from the other direction. Trouble is there is ALWAYS someone coming from the other direction.

It is the primary artery between the much larger city of Gadsden and the college town and traffic both commercial and commuters is very heavy.

I live on the one straight away on the entire road. It is dead straight as an arrow for over a half mile, perhaps three quarters of a mile. I live almost right in the middle of that straight section.

In the first year we lived here there were 13 wrecks in front of my house from my driveway to the neighbor's driveway who live on the other side of the highway. That is a distance of at most 500'.

One of those wrecks was a girl late to get to the college for a class who hit me in the rear end while waiting to turn into my own driveway. Road was wet tho not running with water, she was doing at least 90 mph and likely more. The wreck totaled her car and had she not been wearing her seat belt/shoulder harness and had air bags she prolly wouldn't have lived.

Two of them ran off the road and onto my land around my driveway, another ran off the highway and into what is now my pond tho that was before the pond had been dug. Another went flying off the highway at such speed he clipped a power pole into at least 15' up in the air after flying over 50' to get to it. Another went off and flipped and ended upside down. Yet another was a dump truck hitting a vehicle turning into my neighbor's driveway to the west just 250' from my own driveway. It almost killed the guy driving the car.

That was in the first year here. Since then over the years I've seen an untold number more on this stretch of road in front of me. EVERY day there are multiple wrecks on this road from my house to the western end only 3 miles away.

Only a month or two ago one was so bad they landed the helicopter on the road to air lift someone out and it took 8-10 hours to clear the highway for use again.

This road isn't really wide but is wide enough if you have sense enough to drive. BUT it is built up all along the length by from 10' to well over 50' above the old level before the road was built. There isn't much room once  your tires leave the pavement until you are involved in a wreck. You must keep your tires on the pavement and you must pay attention to your driving when going 55.

Most seem to want to drive 75 and the road isn't safe at that speed.

I've been here over 25 years. In that time I doubt there has been a single day gone by without a wreck along this short less than 10 mile long road. We hear the sirens going to the next one multiple times a day.

The trouble is the whole damned world other than me seems to be in a hurry to get from where they are to where they aren't. Me I never rush to get anywhere. If ya need to be there a few minutes sooner then just leave a few minutes earlier.

Speed kills and along this short section of road it has done so many times since I moved here.

Sounds like a pet cemetery hwy. The one going by our house sure is. Always some fresh road kill on it.

I have to agree that slow moving vehicles are dangerous. However, its usually the idiot doing 80+ while talking or texting on a cell phone that rear ends them.

speed limits and signs dont cure stupid Bill. Im not condoning driving 90mph on a two lane road either. We see it all the time here in the winter. Roads can be snow covered or ice covered and some idiot that never drove in those conditions think they can drive there jacked up diesel f250 65 mph because the sign says so and by God they have a 80k 4x4.

Phone use while driving should carry the same penalty as drunk driving. It probably causes more wrecks today then drunk driving and speeding. Comical thing is car manufactures encourge it by putting them right in your car or allowing you to plug your phone in to the entertainment center. to me thats about like putting a beer dispenser in the entertainment center or having a joint rolling machine in the counsel

back to my lame 4 cyl jeep. I hated that thing. But it was kind of amazing. My grandaughter has it now. i gave it to her when i bought the jk. that thing now has a 120k on it and id bet at least 90 percent of that was with the peddle buried in the floor though the gears and even on the highway. must be tough little motors. Still doesnt burn a drop of oil.

You ever see one of those high dollar 4x4 bad azz trucks get out of control going to fast on an Ice covered road?
It's something to see, the last time we had that a couple of them were upside down in the bar ditch.
Four wheel drive doesent make you impervious to road conditions.

yup its comical come snowmobiling when the young come up north in there lifted trucks with giant tires and find out a front wheel drive with all seasons is easier to drive on snow covered roads and that that big bad 4x4 is about dangerous. That there Big wide tires are terrible on hard pack snow or ice. Especially when there pulling a 4 place snowmobile tralier. But they look cool. you can tell a local kid with money up here. In the winter they have big lifted trucks with tiny looking tires on it for the winter. Or at least tall narrow tires without big lugs and with some sipeing in the tread.  you also learn real fast that unless theres a foot or two of snow on the road your much better off in 2 wheel drive. Get a truck in 4 wheel drive kicked out sideways and try to correct with steering and gas like you would in 2 wheel drive and you will go straight into the ditch. Just picture a dirt track car trying to slide around a corner in when the front wheels are trying to pull you the way there aimed. Used to be comical too back in the 60s and 70s around here when muscle cars were all over. the air force base that was open back then had a learning curve every year when the boys from the south brought up there muscle cars with 50s or 60s bias ply tires on the back. We used to go out after a snow storm with my dads 4x4 chev and charge them 10 bucks a pop to pull them out of the ditch. About a 25 mile distance between the base and the nearest big town and we would go up and down it and by the time we drove one way pulled a couple out wed turn around and catch a couple new ones on the way back. Made 240 bucks one day doing it. That was good money back in the early 70s! Worked great till my old man figured out why i always wanted to borrow his truck. He put the kabash to our 2 winter long making money scheme. Still remember laughing when my dad came home and told us the black airman from SC that worked with him asked him where he got the tractor tires for his pickup. hed never heard of snow tires. Have you guys seen that Indian licensed Jeep they're now importing?  Unfortunately it's off road only but it looks pretty good for the money.

  I'm in Bill's zone when driving...I just have to be sure i am not driving too slow, since I don't want to impede another's driving.  On the interstates (65 mph), I set at about 62, stay right, and let others join into the competitive circus.  Too often, I have seen people go raging by me, just to catch up with them, stopped 5 miles down the road, for some reason or another.  Sometimes it is flashing red & blue lights, which have slowed their progress. 
  That happened just last Wednesday, when a fellow passed me in a black, classic Chrysler convertible, waving over his shoulder at me.  I had gone about 4 miles, before passed by him (and the cop) again, just north of a school zone.  It was then that I recognized him as Mark..one of three local brothers, who I know well, from their Sunday School days.  They have a large, used car operation and a sizeable collection of classics, from an old VW bus, to the Chrysler, almost anything worth it from the '50s forward... not to mention the old '37 "coffin nosed" Cord, their Dad left them, when he moved off to Florida, ..all of them, in pristine condition.
   I have had 2, CJ5 Jeeps and a '42 Ford Jeep from WW2.. The Ford was the most fun, but not as much fun as the 2 Samurais I had.  I rarely used full power of any of them off road..since I figure springs, axles, transmissions and transfer cases can be quite costly.

   My ''78 CJ was a bummer, since it seemed to be a last-gasp AMC model which I bought new, off the lot.  I later figured that it must have been an end-run, when I noticed that the steel ring the steering wheel was molded upon was showing through on the lower side.  They just painted it black..and sent it out..
  That CJ, was treacherous in slippery weather, since it had no power steering (about 4.5 turns, lock to lock), and with the steering wheel close to the chest, if it went into a skid on ice, one just couldn't turn the wheel fast enough to counter...  So in those fall or spring days, when the road may vary between ice, snow and bare road, I had to run in fwd.  It had AMC's big 6 engine, so the front to rear weight ratio was far off, and that didn't help any.
  My '98, Chrysler built CJ was much better, the 2.5 L 4cyl was set far back in the engine compartment, so the F to R weight ratio was very good. 
    Today I drive a Jeep Patriot, and though it is a 2015 model, the mileage is low (about 40K), so I will keep it for a while, since it seems to serve me well.
 
    Not criticizing anyone else, but for me, the days of whirlwind driving are far past..
