Oregon on Tuesday became the first state to legalize magic mushroom therapy — and to decriminalize small amounts of all street drugs.

The mushroom bill, measure 109, allows trained “facilitators” to give patients psilocybin — the psychedelic compound in mushrooms — as a mental health treatment, and guide them through trips at licensed centers.

Regulatory details, including how to qualify as a therapist, will be hammered out over the next two years, according to the bill — which was passing with more than 56 percent support Tuesday night, according to OregonLive.com

The state also made history with the approval of a bill that decriminalizes the possession of small amounts of drugs including heroin, cocaine, Oxycodone and methamphetamine, according to the paper.

The bill, Measure 110, reclassifies drug possession as a civil violation — similar to a traffic offense — with a $100 fine. It funds addiction treatment and other drug-related “harm reduction.”

Partial returns Tuesday showed the measure had passed with 62 percent support

Since I have no plans to visit, or migrate to Oregon,  I'm fine with their decision.

On the bright side, 99% of the stoners using these substances aren't fit to vote anyway.  It remains to be seen if it's actually implemented...  I bet cops will still bust people for possession.

Meanwhile one of the most dangerous drugs out there, alcohol, gets a total pass from society. People don't even view it as a drug.

There are an estimated 95000 alcohol related deaths each year, more than any other drug out there. I wonder why politicians never talk about that?

It couldn't be any worse than Portland.  After the last tax increase failed to pass, Portland doubled all traffic fines and doubled the amount of citations given out.  I wasn't joking about not going though Portland if I can at all avoid it.  I really wish my daughter and grandkids would move out of that hellhole.

Personally I'd be happy with public flogging for drunk driving convictions.  However I have an axe to grind since a drunk driver hit me on my motorcycle back in 1983.

I used to be able to get pain meds from my doctor now if I want them I have to track down a drug pusher.  I haven't gone that rout but there's been a few times I've been tempted.

I would be in favor of that too. Punishments for drunk driving are a joke. 10,000 - 20,000 deaths caused by drunk drivers every year and all we do is fine people a few hundred dollars and take their license for a few months on a first offense, it makes me sick.

Then just like with guns we punish the law abiding folks who need pain meds because of the people who abuse them instead of punishing the people who cause the problems.

From Rancher;  "No Sir, We don't,  But the Liberals want the Sheep Drunk, Drugged and Dumb.... "

Sure thing; that way the leftist/communists, can go out with busses, give them more of the same..&^#%..and get them vote as the want!

From DB; "Meanwhile one of the most dangerous drugs out there, alcohol, gets a total pass from society. People don't even view it as a drug."

That stuff doesn't get a pass from me either, especially since I had a brother killed by a drunk driver, while he was walking beside the highway.  I never use the stuff...but in this case, the lefties want to add even more danger producing crap !

Collectively" Oregon got what they voted for.

The downside is that the conservatives living there will have to put up with it.

I went to college with a botanist. She said mushrooms are tricky. Some you can eat, get high on,others will get you high, but kill off your kidneys. And they look the same.  You have got to know what you are picking.

This sounds pretty weird. Acid and mushrooms are serious stuff. People get crazy and it’s not called a “Trip” for nothing. The CIA worked with LSD. People jumped out of windows.

Up here if you want to pick the mushrooms that affect your head, you can do it and no one will know or care.
Drug laws have done nothing to help this cournty; it is just a different version of prohibition with the same effect ruining lives and causing death because some politicians are god wannabes.
Prohibition worked SO WELL.

Peyote and Biological genera containing psilocybin mushrooms include Copelandia, Gymnopilus, Inocybe, Panaeolus, Pholiotina, Pluteus, and Psilocybe are not close to being in the same league as Meth. but the laws that banned them brought us Meth. and now Marijuana that compared to the ditch weed that started it decades ago is like comparing Everclear to Near Beer.

While not being total abstainers such as myself, I don't recall my parents ever mentioning how prohibition ever affected them in any negative way.  They rarely drank, and were of course, not involved with the illicit production or distribution of the stuff..so it apparently was a moot point with them.
Much as I personally do not like government ordering citizens on how to live their lives, I do wish people were more circumspect, and could see how any addictive substance is such a negative force in their life...and quite often this bleeds over to affect the lives of otherwise innocent victims.
...But of course, those of us who dislike government inserting itself into personal lives... we haven't seen anything yet, should the socialists/communists take over the USA!

I do think that many people however misguided, thought they were doing a good deed by implementing such a measure, and in some ways they did.. (battered wives & children & unnecessary deaths on highways etc..) However I think they underestimated the level of addiction to the substance.
IMO..to say the prohibition law caused the criminal enterprise of bootlegging and related criminal activities, would be a stretch.  More likely it was the individual's rabid craving of the substance that fostered such activity.

Bootlegging made Joe Kennedy and others very wealthy.
The wealth he and others made through bootlegging, gave him, and others, the power to push his sons, and others,  into corrupt Politicians, as the bootlegging money was used to buy many a politician, and this country is still paying for the Volstad Act

Whenever the government bans something whether it be alcohol, guns, drugs, etc. the black market ALWAYS fills the void. A better approach would be to make punishments much stricter for committing any crimes under the influence of drugs. Mandatory 10 years in jail for 1st offense drunk driving would basically put an end to drunk driving and save 10,000+ lives per year. History has proven over and over that trying to prevent crimes by banning alcohol, guns, drugs, etc. has little effect on crime rates.
