Need good 1917 smith
« on: February 29, 2004, 08:59:33 PM »
I have a 1917 Enfield that was converted to 458WM by someone that didnot know what they were doing. I acquired the rifle as is, no recoil lugs in stock; does not pick up 2nd round consistently; ported barrel.
I am looking for someone reliable to correct these problems or convert to something larger.

Are you looking for a local guy, where are you located?  There are a lot of good smiths.  Sounds like a magazine problem.. When these rifles are converted to belted round the magazines must be widened to allow the ammo to lie at the correct angle in the feed lips.  Does it occasionally allow the round feeding from the left side of the action to pop loose into the action, then try double feeding or let it jump completely out of the action onto the  ground?  Any way tell us where your located and perhaps someone can help.

I am near GrandRapids, Mich.  A "local" smith would be nice, although not a priority.

If I need to ship it to somebody, that would not be a problem.  I am not in a big hurry to get it done. I just can't stand having an unuseable firearm.
